Volleyball stung in five sets in OAC opener

The Muskingum volleyball team was stung in five sets in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener by Baldwin Wallace on Friday evening in the Recreation Center, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-27, 13-15.

The Muskies (14-9, 0-1) had two match points in the fourth set but were not able to end the contest. In the decisive fifth set, Baldwin Wallace built an 8-2 lead before the Muskies rallied to tie it at 13-13. However, BW closed out the match with two straight points.

The match also featured a 15-minute power outage in the third set that the Muskies won 25-17.

Freshman Taylour Fatheree led the Muskies at the net with 12 kills and nine blocks. Junior Brooke Scott added 11 spikes and five blocks, while sophomore Katie Hunt and senior Alexa Abrams each had 10 kills.

Freshman Taylor Mathews logged 21 assists to help direct the attack and sophomore Kayleigh Hendrix had 20 assists.

Freshman Deidre Prince led the defensive effort with 47 digs, while junior Lane Browning added 28 and Abrams had 25.

Muskingum ended the match with 55 kills, 47 assists, 159 digs and 20 total blocks.

Baldwin Wallace (13-8, 1-0) was led by Markema Winters who had 11 kills and six blocks. Lauryn Wright added 10 spikes.

Katie Primeau registered 25 assists and Arlayna Newcomer had a match-high 47 digs.

Muskingum next plays at Capital on Tuesday, October 7. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
