
The Ohio Athletic Conference has named sophomore forward Caitlyn DeMassimo the OAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, sponsored by Midstream Lighting, for her record-breaking performance in Muskingum's thrilling double-overtime win against 11th-ranked Ohio Northern on Saturday to conclude the 2022-23 season. This marks the second time DeMassimo has been named OAC Player of the Week this season.
DeMassimo set school records for points in a game (38), free throws made in a game (16), and free throws attempted in a game (17) to fuel Muskingum to a thrilling 89-83 double-overtime victory over 11th-ranked Ohio Northern.
DeMassimo's 38 points passed the previous record of 37, which was set by Jessica McKenzie against Manhattanville during the 2008-09 season, Tiffiany Youl vs. Denison during the 2008-09 season, and Heather Rakosik at Otterbein during the 1996-97 season. Additionally, DeMassimo also set new records for free throws made in a game (16) and free throws attempted in a game (17). The previous record for free throws made in a game was 12, set by assistant coach Olivia Besancon against Wooster during the 2017-18 season and Jessica Gates at John Carroll during the 2001-02 season. The previous record for free throw attempts in a game was 14 set by assistant coach Olivia Besancon vs. Wooster during the 2017-18 season, Jessica McKenzie at John Carroll during the 2006-07 season, and Julie Hoag vs. Heidelberg during the 1988-89 season.
This season, DeMassimo ranked second in the OAC in free throw percentage at 89.4% and averaged 12.5 points per game which put her fourth in the conference. Additionally, she also grabbed 6.8 boards per game which landed her fifth in the OAC.
