Women’s Basketball sweeps season series against Capital for the first time since 1988-89 campaign 

The Muskingum women's basketball team defeated Capital on Wednesday night, 68-58. The win propelled the Muskies to their first season sweep over Capital since the 1988-89 campaign.

  • The season series sweep marks the first time the Muskies have swept the Comets since the 1988-89 campaign.

Inside the Numbers 

  • The Muskies were led offensively by sophomore duo Taylor DeMassimo and Leia Smith who each finished the night with 10 points. DeMassimo also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Senior Tanner Wirth and junior Casey Smith each chipped in nine points for the Muskies. 
  • Freshman Halle Morehead finished the contest with eight points, while freshman Caitlyn DeMassimo rounded out the Muskie scoring effort with seven points.
  • Capital was led by Laney Murphy who had a game-high 17 points.
  • On the night, Muskingum shot 20-of-55 from the field, while the Comets went 21-of-50.
  • The Muskies shot 22-of-26 from the free-throw line, while Capital finished 12-of-21.

 How it Happened 

  • After a slow start from both teams, each squad traded baskets back-and-forth, but it was Muskingum who found their offensive rhythm ending the quarter on a nine-point surge. The Muskies went into the second quarter with a 17-13 advantage over the Comets.
  • Fueled by a Morehead triple to start the second quarter the Muskies scored the first eight points of the second quarter, building a 12-point lead. The Muskies went into the break with a 32-27 lead.
  • The Muskies would string together a 14-2 run to end the third quarter heading into the final period with a comfortable 51-38 lead.
  • The Comets trimmed the Muskingum 11-point lead down to four with 2:32 remaining in the contest, but the Muskies came up with clutch defensive stops and an 8-2 run to hold onto their lead and secure a 68-58 win.
