Women’s Basketball falls on the road against #24 Marietta

The Muskingum women's basketball team fell on the road against twenty-fourth ranked Marietta, 94-72 at the Ban Johnson Arena on Wednesday night.

The Basics

Inside the Numbers

  • The Muskies were led by junior Casey Smith who tallied a game-high 21 points. Smith finished the night 10-of-13 (76.9%) from the field while snagging a team-high eight rebounds, and one steal.
  • Sophomore Taylor DeMassimo finished the night with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
  • Sophomore Leia Smith chipped in 12 points, while freshman Halle Morehead finished with nine points. Smith finished with six rebounds and two assists, while Morehead dished out three assists and had two steals.
  • Marietta was led by Jill Congrove who closed the night out with 16 points.
  • Muskingum finished the night 22-of-55 (40.0%) from the field, 7-of-19 (36.8%) from beyond the arc, and 21-for-30 from the free-throw line.
  • Marietta finished the night 33-of-90 (36.7%) from the field, 8-of-26 (30.8%) from beyond the arc, and 20-for-22 from the free-throw line.

 How it Happened

  • A back-and-forth opening quarter would turn in favor of Muskingum with 5:38 remaining as a DeMassimo triple gave the Muskies a four-point lead over the Pioneers. The Muskies finished the quarter with an 18-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • The second quarter saw both squads trade baskets and exchange leads. The Pioneers would proceed to score 26 points heading into the half as they took a 40-38 lead going into the break.
  • Out of the break, Marietta would use 13 unanswered points in the opening minutes to take a 15-point lead over the Muskies. The Pioneers proceeded to use a 32 third-quarter surge to break away from the Muskies as they had a 72- 54 lead going into the final period.
  • Marietta opened the final period on a 14-0 run and maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest to secure a 94-72 victory.
