Women’s Basketball uses second-half surge to beat Bethany

The Muskingum women's basketball team scored 49 second-half points to shoot past Bethany on Saturday night, 77-69.

Inside the Numbers

  • Sophomore Taylor DeMassimo guided the Muskies with a team-high 14 points. DeMassimo shot 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the field, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out two assists.
  • Sophomore Leia Smith chipped in 11 points, shooting 4-of-9 (44.4%). Smith dished out three assists, grabbed four rebounds, and had one steal.
  • Freshman Milayna Williams registered 11 points, dished out three assists, and grabbed three steals.
  • Senior Tanner Wirth notched nine points and dished out a game-high five assists.
  • Muskingum ended the contest shooting 30-of-56 (53.6%) from the field and finished 12-of-19 (63.2%) from the free-throw line.
  • Ashleigh Wheeler led the Bison offense with 18 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
  • Bethany shot 21-of-58 (36.2%) from the field and finished 21-of-24 (87.5%) from the free-throw line.

The Difference

  • The Bison captured momentum early in the contest with a 10-0 run in the first quarter. After the first quarter Bethany would lead, 23-12.
  • Bethany outscored the Muskies 20-16 in the second quarter making it a 43-28 Bison lead going into the half.
  • The Muskies got off to a hot start in the second half, piecing together a 13-0 run to trim the Bison lead to 43-42.
  • The Muskies first lead of the night came from a Milayna Williams three to make it, 50-49 mid-way through the third quarter.
  • Muskingum led after the third quarter, 58-54.
  • The Muskies finished the third quarter 13-of-18 (72.2%) from the field, 3-of-5 (60.0%) from behind the arc, and 8-of-9 (88.9%) from the free-throw line. They only allowed 11 Bison points.
  • After a back-and-fourth start to the final period, Muskingum was able to come up with clutch plays down the stretch to secure the victory.
  • The Muskies' 49 second-half points were too much to handle for the Bison as the Muskies got the home win, 77-69.
  • Aiding Muskingum to their victory were their points in the paint, dominating the Bison, 46-28.
  • The Muskies ended the outing with a 30-19 edge in bench points and 20-2 in fast break points.
