Halftime lead evaporates in home loss

The Muskingum women's basketball team had a 27-26 halftime lead evaporate in a 74-60 home loss against Wilmington on Saturday afternoon.

After the opening four minutes of play, the Muskies surged to a 15-4 lead. Wilmington slowly chipped away at its deficit and the tied the game at 25-25 with 2:02 left in the half. Muskingum took a 27-26 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Quakers used a 30-7 run over an eight-minute span to erase a four-point deficit (37-33) and take a 63-40 lead and control of the game with 6:51 to play.

Muskingum (3-12, 1-7) was led by freshman Olivia Besancon who scored a career-high 18 points. She also added two rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Junior Angela Darnley had 11 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Mallory Taylor had seven points and six rebounds.

The Muskies ended the game shooting .350 (21-of-60) from the field.

Wilmington (9-6, 4-4) was paced by Brittaney Jefferson who scored a game-high 26 points with seven rebounds. Mary Moyer added 15 markers and eight boards.

The Quakers shot .426 (23-of-54) from the floor and ended the outing with a 31-9 edge in bench points.

Muskingum next travels to Capital on Wednesday, January 21. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
