Late run lifts Mount Union past Muskingum

The Muskingum women's basketball team fell at Mount Union on Wednesday night, 84-72.

Muskingum junior Taylor Maurer led the squad with 21 points on seven three-point shots. Maurer connected on 7-of-9 from behind the arc.

Freshman Olivia Besancon and sophomore Jasmine Goings each added 11 points. Goings also had seven rebounds and three assists.

Junior Angela Darnley registered nine points and five assists.

Muskingum (3-11, 1-6) ended the game shooting .404 (21-of-52) from the floor. The Muskies hit 12-of-20 (.600) from three-point land.

Mount Union (6-8, 2-5) was led by Annie Bova who scored 21 points and had seven rebounds.

Nancy Osborn added 18 points for the Purple Raiders, while Sarah Grippi had 12 points and Chandler Moore had 10 points.

Mount Union shot .433 (26-of-60) from the field and connected on 13 three-point shots.

Muskingum ended the first half with five straight free throws to take a 38-37 lead at the break.

Mount Union opened the first seven minutes of play in the second half with a 19-7 run to take a 56-45 lead.

The Muskies slowly rallied back and a three-point shot by Besancon trimmed the Muskie gap to 71-70 with 3:10 to play.

However, Mount Union answered the Muskingum charge with six straight points to regain the momentum en route to the win.

Muskingum next hosts Wilmington on Saturday, January 17. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
