Early lead evaporates in home loss

The Muskingum women's basketball team saw an early lead evaporate as Otterbein stormed past the Muskies on Wednesday night, 81-66.

The Muskies opened the contest with a 14-2 spurt. However, Otterbein fought back to send the game into the intermission knotted at 37-37.

In the second half, Otterbein used a 19-4 surge over a a seven-minute span to take a 75-58 lead at the 2:40 mark and control of the game.

Senior Taylor Maurer and freshman Shelbi VanMeter led the team with 13 points each. Maurer also added eight rebounds and four assists, while VanMeter connected on 6-of-9 from the field and recorded four boards.

Junior Mallory Taylor and sophomore Jasmine Goings each added nine points.

Muskingum (3-6, 1-3) ended the game shooting .410 (25-of-61) from the field.

Otterbein (4-6, 2-2) was led by Mary Corbett who erupted for 31 points. Amariah Huck added 19 points and six rebounds and Chelsea Reed narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine assists.

The Cardinals shot .500 (28-of-56) from the field, which included hitting nine three-point shots.

Muskingum next plays at Ohio Northern on Saturday, December 20. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
