Softball splits doubleheader with Capital

The Muskingum softball team split against Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Capital at Donna J. Newberry Field on Wednesday evening. The Comets won the opener 7-2, while the Muskies secured the nightcap in six innings, 9-1.

The Basics

Records: Muskingum (18-8 Overall, 5-3 OAC), Capital (8-12 Overall, 1-7 OAC)

Location: Donna J. Newberry Field – New Concord, Ohio

How it Happened – Game 1

  • The Comets plated the first run of the game in the third off an RBI single through the left side.
  • Muskingum plated its run to even the score 1-1 off a fielder's choice from Carlee Lamacz.
  • A Cara Taylor bunt to the catcher, saw the Muskies pull ahead 2-1 heading into the seventh.
  • Capital used a six-run, four hit, seventh inning to claim the 7-2 game one victory.  

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Muskingum scored two runs off six hits and left 10 runners on base.
  • Senior Hannah Smith got the start in the circle for Muskingum. Smith tossed 6.2 innings and struck out five batters on the day.
  • Freshman Cara Taylor led the Muskies at the plate finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while senior Carlee Lamacz notched an RBI.
  • Seniors Claire Guilliams and Haley Hawk ended the contest with two hits apiece.
  • Lexie Legget led the Capital bats finishing 2-for-4 at the plate and tallied three RBIs, and a run scored.

How it Happened – Game 2

  • A groundout to shortstop saw Capital jump out to a quick, 1-0 lead in the opening inning.
  • Muskingum used a three-run, four hit second inning, to jump ahead 3-1. The inning was highlighted by a Carlee Lamacz two-run home run.
  • Muskingum padded their lead, 4-1 in the third off a solo-home run from Haley Hawk.
  • The Muskies used another three-run four hit inning extending their lead, 7-1. The Muskie rally was ignited by a Cara Taylor single through the right side and a Kalie Eshelman two-RBI single to the pitcher.
  • Muskingum plated its final two runs of the game off a wild pitch and a Rosie Hayes RBI single to center field to secure the 9-1 victory. 

Inside the Numbers – Game 2

  • Muskingum scored nine runs off 13 hits.
  • Junior Madelyn Thomas got the start in game two for the Muskies tossing 6.0 innings of work while also striking out nine batters.
  • Junior Rosie Hayes led the Muskies at the dish going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while freshman Sadie Smith finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Lamacz finished with a home run and run scored, while junior Kalie Eshelman added a hit and knocked in two RBIs.
  • Haley Hawk notched a home run, while freshman Kaitlyn Bibb tallied two hits and two runs scored.
  • Lexie Legget led the Comets with a hit and an RBI.

Up Next

  • Muskingum is back in action on Saturday, April 15, when they host OAC-foe Baldwin Wallace in its Cancer Awareness/Youth Day game. First-pitch of the OAC doubleheader is set for a 1PM start at Donna J. Newberry Field.
  • After game one of the doubleheader, children 12 and under will have the opportunity to run the bases.
