Softball sweeps Wittenberg in doubleheader action

The Muskingum softball team defeated Wittenberg in doubleheader action on Tuesday afternoon at Donna J. Newberry Field. The Muskies defeated the Tigers in game one 6-2 and won game two in walk-off fashion, 5-4.

Inside the Numbers – Game One

  • Muskingum scored six runs on 11 hits.
  • Sophomore Madelyn Thomas pitched six innings earning six strikeouts while allowing one run off two hits. She also finished the game with two hits to help pace the Muskie bats.
  • Junior Sarah Piteo led the Muskie offense going 2-for-3 at the plate which included a solo home run. She also chipped in one RBI.
  • Senior Katie Osburn added a hit and two RBIs, while junior Taylor Gallentine chipped in a hit and added an RBI.
  • Senior Haley Hawk finished the contest with two hits.
  • Senior Camryn Woodley rounded out the Muskie offensive effort with one hit.
  • Hanna Ecker and Hannah Weymouth led Wittenberg with an RBI apiece.

 How it Happened - Game One

  • A solo home run from Piteo put Muskingum up 1-0 in the first inning.
  • The Muskies extended their lead in the third inning off an Osburn two-RBI single. A fielding error from the Tiger defense would plate a Muskie, making it 4-0 Muskingum.
  • The Tigers scored their run in the fourth off an Ecker double to right-center. Muskingum still held a 5-1 lead after the fourth.
  • A single to third base from Gallentine went on to plate the final Muskingum run of the game.
  • Wittenberg plated their final run off a single to center field in the seventh. Although the Tigers loaded up the bases with the tying run in the batter's box, Muskingum's defensive stops secured a 6-2 victory.

Inside the Numbers – Game Two

  • Muskingum scored five runs on 11 hits.
  • Senior Hannah Smith started in the circle for the Muskies and pitched all seven innings earning four strikeouts allowing four runs off six hits. Smith earned her sixth win of the season. 
  • Hawk and Osburn each added three hits and an RBI for Muskingum.
  • Senior Cristianna Boggs chipped in two hits.
  • Sophomore Autumn Chorba, Junior Carlee Lamacz, and sophomore Kalie Eshelman each added a hit to contribute to the Muskie offense.
  • Samantha Zungri led Wittenberg with three RBIs.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • After the top half of the first inning, Wittenberg jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.
  • Muskingum answered with two runs of their own to trim down the Tiger lead to one. Wittenberg held a 3-2 edge over the Muskies after inning one.
  • A Piteo Sacrifice fly to left field tied the ballgame at three.
  • A Muskie defensive error in the fourth scored a Wittenberg runner for the Tigers to claim a 4-3 lead.
  • The bottom half of the fourth saw the Muskies tie the contest at four off an Eshelman sacrifice fly to center.
  • With one out and a runner on first, Hawk went on to hit a game-winning RBI double to secure a Muskingum 5-4 win.
