Softball ices Polar Bears in road doubleheader

The Muskingum softball team swept OAC opponent Ohio Northern on Saturday afternoon at ONU Softball Field. The Muskies won Game 1, 4-3 and Game 2, 2-0.

Inside the Numbers - Game 1

  • Junior Hannah Smith collected the win on the mound pitching 6.1 innings and allowing three runs off eight hits.
  • Freshman Madelyn Thomas earned the save for the Muskies.
  • Senior Shaena Mayer added three hits including a triple and tallied an RBI.
  • Freshman Alex Fankhauser notched one hit and two RBIs for the Muskies.
  • Senior Karsyn Shaffer notched two hits.
  • Senior Bailey Waitkus added a hit to the contest.
  • Abby Davis had two hits, while both Alicia Swierz and Annika Murray added one hit and an RBI for the Polar Bear offense.
  • Allie Bican dealt the loss for the Polar Bears, pitching a complete game and allowing four runs off seven hits.

The Difference – Game 1

  • The Muskies plated their first two runs in the first inning off a Fankhauser two-RBI single to take an early, 2-0.
  • The Muskies continued with their hot bats in the second as Mayer belted an RBI triple extending their lead, 3-0. Mayer went on to score the Muskies final run on a pass ball, making it 4-0.
  • The Polar Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to come within one run, and had bases loaded with one out before they popped into a game-ending double play.
  • The Muskies scored four runs off seven hits.

Inside the Numbers – Game 2

  • Senior Hannah Duff earned her ninth win of the season pitching a complete game and allowed no runs off three hits.
  • Sophomore Carlee Lamacz blasted a solo homerun in the contest.
  • Junior Haley Hawk added two hits and collected an RBI for the Muskies.
  • Seniors Riley Powers and Shaffer both notched two hits in the contest, each had a double.
  • Fankhauser and Mayer both tallied one hit each for the Muskies.
  • Abby Elliot, Hannah Reubel, and Alicia Swierz each added a hit for Ohio Northern.
  • Stacey Walters dealt the loss for the Polar Bears pitching a complete game, allowing two runs off nine hits.

The Difference – Game 2

  • Lamacz blasted a solo homerun in the second inning for the Muskies to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Muskies went on to plate their final run in the fourth off a Hawk RBI single making it, 2-0.
