Softball drops two at #21 Mount Union

The Muskingum softball team dropped their Ohio Athletic Conference road doubleheader against #21 Mount Union. They fell in Game 1, 5-3, and Game 2, 14-4.  

The Basics

  • Muskingum (15-9, 14-6), Mount Union (19-5, 16-4)
  • Location: Alliance, Ohio - 23rd Street Field.
  • Attendance: 100

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Junior Hannah Smith got the start for the Muskies but was relieved in the first inning before recording an out allowing three runs off two hits.
  • Freshman Madelyn Thomas fired 6.0 innings of relief allowing two runs off six hits.
  • The Muskies were led by Seniors Karsyn Shaffer and Shaena Mayer who added two hits to the game.
  • Senior Riley Powers, juniors Rachel Hankin and Katie Osburn each notched a hit for the Muskies.
  • Sophomore Claire Warschauer chipped in an RBI.
  • Maddie Pidgeon led the Purple Raider offense with two hits and two RBI's. Brooklyn Hellman also chipped in two hits to guide Mount Union.
  • Alyssa Rose got the start on the mound for Mount Union throwing all seven innings and allowing three runs off eight hits.

The Difference – Game 1

  • Mount Union got their first runs of the game off a Pidgeon two run RBI double to left center, making it a Purple Raider, 2-0 lead in the first inning. Pidgeon would later score in the inning off a wild pitch to make it, 3-0.
  • The Muskies plated their first run in the second inning capitalizing on a Mount Union error from the pitcher, Rose. The Muskies struck again on a Warschauer sacrifice bunt to shorten the lead, 3-2. They tied the game off a wild pitch making it, 3-3.
  • Mount Union took advantage of an infield error from the Muskies allowing the game leading run to get on base. The run would later score that inning off a Maggie Domminick sacrifice fly to center, giving the Purple Raiders a 4-3 lead.
  • Mount Union scored their final run of the game off an Ally Goldy RBI double to left center to make it a, 5-3 Mount Union lead.
  • The Muskies loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs but could not capitalize on the opportunity to get a run across the plate.
  • The Muskies left eight runners left on base for the contest.

Inside the Numbers – Game 2

  • The Muskies pitching trio of Senior Hannah Duff, sophomore Skylar Lafferty, and freshman Autumn Chorba allowed 14 runs on 15 hits. Duff, who started the game, took the loss for Muskingum.
  • Hankin guided the Muskie offense adding two hits including a solo home run and tallied two RBI's.
  • Sophomore Cristianna Boggs added a hit and collected two RBIs to the contest.
  • Junior Haley Hawk added one hit and one RBI for the Muskies.
  • Mayer, Osburn, and Warshauer each notched one hit.
  • Mount Union was led by Peyton Guspyt who had three hits and tallied two RBIs. Savannah Miner also added two hits and collected four RBI's to the Purple Raider offense.
  • Megan Zody started game two for Mount Union pitching 3.2 innings allowing four runs off seven hits.

The Difference – Game 2

  • The Muskies opened the game with a Mayer triple down the right field line. She would score when Hawk later grounded out to the shortstop, making it a, 1-0 lead.
  • Mount Union answered back and tied the game 1-1, off a Domminick RBI double to center.
  • The Muskies saw their final lead of the game off a solo-homerun blast from Hankin making it 2-1 in the second inning.
  • Mount Union went on an eight-run surge, extending their lead, 9-2. Mount Union finished the second inning with eight runs off eight hits.
  • Mount Union added three more runs in the third inning, stretching their lead, 12-2.
  • The Muskies loaded the bases up in the fourth inning and add two runs off a Boggs two RBI single up the middle, shortening the Purple Raider lead, 12-4.
  • Mount Unions final runs came in the fourth off a Miner two run home run pushing their lead, 14-4.

  • The Muskies hit the road to take on Heidelberg in an OAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. Game 1 is set for 1:00 p.m. and Game 2 is at 3:00 p.m. at Frann's field in Tiffin, Ohio.
