Softball sweeps doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace

The Muskingum softball team swept Baldwin Wallace in Ohio Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Donna J. Newberry Field. The Muskies won the opener 9-8 and took the nightcap, 7-6.

Inside The Numbers - Game 1

  • Senior Karsyn Shaffer led the Muskies going 4-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, and a double.
  • Freshman Alex Fankhauser belted a two-run double.
  • Senior Francesca Stefano smacked a two-run single.
  • Junior Sarah Mills pitched 5.2 innings of masterful relief to earn the win. She scattered eight hits and allowed one unearned run with five strikeouts.
  • Emily Mau led Baldwin Wallace, going 4-for-4 with one run and a double.
  • Alex Kozich and Bridie Bricker each hit a home run.
  • Sydney Uhlenberg took the loss after throwing five innings and allowing two runs on five hits.

The Difference - Game 1

  • The Muskies grabbed an early 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first when they plated eight runs on five hits. Fankhauser and Stefano each had two RBIs in the inning.
  • The Yellow Jackets answered the Muskie early surge with an eight-run top of the second inning. Baldwin Wallace scored eight runs on eight hits.
  • Junior Haley Hawk notched the game-winning hit with an RBI double in the fourth inning that scored Shaffer from second base.

Inside The Numbers - Game 2

  • Hawk went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a double.
  • Junior Katie Osburn went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI double in the sixth inning.
  • Shaffer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Senior Hannah Duff pitched a complete game and allowed six runs on eight hits. She ended the outing with eight strikeouts.
  • Ashley Matousek led the Yellow Jackets with a three-run home run.
  • Reagan Thompson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • Hannah Welling was tagged with the loss after tossing six innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits.

The Difference - Game 1

  • Muskingum jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. The Muskies used four hits to score five runs in the second inning. Hawk led the charge with a two-run double.
  • Baldwin Wallace rallied with five runs in the third and one run in the sixth to tie the game.
  • Osburn smashed an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth that scored pinch-runner Alexia Dowdle from second to lift the Muskies to the win.
