Softball topples Wilmington in twinbill

The Muskingum softball team toppled Wilmington in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon. The Muskies won the opener 4-2 and claimed the night cap, 6-3. The sweep moved Muskingum to 34-0 all-time against Wilmington.

The Basics 

  • Location: New Concord, Ohio - Donna J. Newberry Field
  • Records: Muskingum (11-15 overall, 3-3 OAC), Wilmington (5-19 overall, 1-5 OAC)
  • Weather: Sunny and 65 degrees

Game One 

  • Muskingum senior Haley Dotson fired a complete game surrendering two runs on three hits. With the win, Dotson moved to 6-5 on the year.
  • The Muskies were led at the dish by sophomore Krissy Hughes going 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
  • Sophomore Cassie Thomas and senior Jessica Matthews both finished with a RBI.
  • Muskingum scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning off a RBI single by Matthews. 
  • Wilmington responded plating two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the 2-1 advantage.
  • Hughes led the Muskie charge in the bottom half of the fifth inning as she scored the potential game-winning run with a triple to right field. 
  • Wilmington was led at the plate by Allison Pierce going 1-for-2 with 2 RBI's.
  • Becca Carpenter dealt the loss for the Quakers throwing 4.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits.

Game Two

  • Junior Haylea Debolt moved to 6-5 overall on the season pitching five scoreless innings.
  • At the plate, Muskingum was led by Debolt, Hughes and sophomore Rachel Eberling with two RBI's each.
  • Matthews finished the game 1-for-3 with a double, while junior Abigail Orr went 2-for-2.
  • Muskingum used a two-out rally in the bottom of the first inning to capture the 3-0 lead.
  • Wilmington tied the contest in the top of the second following a Muskie miscue, 3-3.
  • Hughes provided the clutch hit for Muskingum in the bottom of the sixth inning as she singled to second base scoring Eberling and sophomore Samantha Skuce
  • The Quakers were led by KenDahl Bowles going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • In the circle, Beth Persicano took the loss throwing 3.2 innings surrendering three runs on four hits.
