Softball falls on final day of Rebel Spring Games

Saturday, March 11 - The Muskingum softball team fell on the final day of the Rebel Spring Games dropping a 4-1 decision to The College of New Jersey and falling to William Paterson 3-2 in Kissimmee, Fla.

Against TCNJ, Muskingum tallied one run on seven hits. Senior Jessica Matthews led the way going 2-for-4 with one RBI at the dish. Sophomore Rachel Eberling took the loss for the Muskies pitching five innings and surrendering four runs (one earned) on eight hits.

In the contest with William Paterson, senior Haley Dotson recorded the loss, pitching a complete game allowing three runs on six hits. Muskingum plated two runs on eight hits. Sophomore Cassie Thomas led the Muskies at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBI's.

Muskingum returns to action Saturday, March 18 for its home opener with Thomas More. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

Friday, March 10 - The Muskingum softball team fell against Westminster 3-1 and dropped a 3-2 decision to nationally ranked Rowan on Friday at the Rebel Spring Games.

Senior Haley Dotson got the call against Westminster, pitching 6.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned run) on four hits. The Muskies plated one run on eight hits. Muskingum's one run came in the top of the fifth inning following an RBI single by senior Jessica Matthews. The senior went 1-for-3 at the plate.

In the contest with nationally ranked Rowan, Muskingum hung tough plating two runs on five hits. The Muskies took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as freshman Jolyn Shunk and Matthews both recorded RBI doubles. Rowan rallied back plating one run in the second inning and two in the third inning to seal the win. Sophomore Rachel Eberling tossed the loss for Muskingum pitching a complete game surrendering three runs (two earned runs) on eight hits. 

Muskingum closes out its spring break trip on Saturday, March 11 as they take on TCNJ and William Paterson at the Rebel Spring Games. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. and will feature live stats. 

Thursday, March 9 - Muskingum softball splits on Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games beating Montclair State 11-3 and falling in extra innings to Defiance 9-8 on Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games. 

In the contest with Montclair State, Muskingum scored 11 runs on 10 hits. Sophomore Cassie Thomas led the team at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Muskies' scored nine runs in the bottom of the third inning, led by sophomore Kylie Zifer who doubled to right plating two runs. Junior Abigail Orr, junior Melissa Maiorano, freshman Jennifer Schrader and Thomas all finished with an RBI in the inning. Senior Haley Dotson got the win in the circle improving to 2-2 overall, surrendering six hits.

Against Defiance, Muskingum fell in 10 innings scoring eight runs on 15 hits. Orr led the Muskie offense going 2-for-5 at the dish with two RBI's. The Muskies' plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning to capture the 5-1 lead. Defiance rallied scoring one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the contest at 5-5. Both teams scored a run in the seventh to force extra innings before a single to center by the Yellow Jackets in the bottom the 10th inning sealed the win. Senior Dakota DeAmicis tossed the loss for Muskingum recording 4.2 innings of work allowing seven hits.

Muskingum next plays Westminster (Pa.) and Rowan on Friday, March 9 at the Rebel Spring Games. Game time is set for 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Tuesday, March 7 - Muskies suffer early season setback falling to Widener 8-5 and dropping a game to Bluffton 4-0 on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. 

In the contest with Widener, the Muskies scored five runs on eight hits. Senior Jessica Matthews led the Muskies at the dish going 1-for-2 with two RBI's. Matthews recorded her first RBI of the game in the first inning as she hit a sacrafice fly to right field scoring junior Melissa Maiorano capping off a Muskie 3-0 lead. Widener tied the contest in the top of the second and used a four run outburst in the sixth to seal the win. Junior Haylea Debolt dealt the loss for the Muskies allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits.

Against Bluffton, the Muskingum offense tallied eight hits and drew two walks. Sophomore Kylie Zifer led the offense going  2-for-3 in the contest. Senior Haley Dotson took the loss for the Muskies recording 4.2 innings of work surrendering four runs on seven hits.

Muskingum next plays Montclair St. and Defiance on Thursday, March 9 at the Rebel Spring Games. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. and will feature live stats.

Monday, March 6 -  The Muskies fell to nationally-ranked Coe, 7-0 and suffered a 3-2 setback against Simpson on Monday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.

Against Coe, Muskingum mustered just two hits led by sophomore Cassie Thomas and freshman Jolyn Shunk with one hit a piece. In the circle, senior Haley Dotson recorded the loss after lasting 6.1 innings and allowing seven runs (two earned) on seven hits. 

In the game with Simpson, the Muskies' rally fell short as they plated two runs on six hits. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the seventh, senior Jessica Matthews woke up the offense as she singled to left center. Sophomore Samantha Skuce then doubled to center, setting the stage for senior Dakota DeAmicis. The senior singled to right center scoring Matthews and Skuce, before an infield pop up retired the side. Sophomore Rachel Eberling tossed the loss for the Muskies allowing three runs on seven hits.

Muskingum next plays Widener and Bluffton at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, March 7. Game time is set for 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and will feature live stats.

Sunday, March 5 - The Muskingum softball team split on its opening day of the 2017 season at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. The Muskies won its season opener against Bridgewater (Va.) 3-0, and fell to Aurora in eight innings, 4-3.

In the opener, Muskingum scored three runs on six hits. Senior Jessica Matthews and freshman Jennifer Schrader led the way with one RBI each. Junior Melissa Maiorano finished with three hits, while sophomore Kylie Zifer recorded two hits for the Muskies. Senior Haley Dotson earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game two-hitter. 

Against Aurora, the Muskies scored three runs on six hits. Muskingum captured the 2-0 lead in the top of the first following RBI's from Zifer and Schrader. Aurora took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a single to centerfield, 3-2. Muskingum responded by tying the contest in the top of the fifth before a Muskie miscue plated the winning run in extra innings. Sophomore Rachel Eberling was delt the loss after going 7.1 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits.

Muskingum next plays Coe and Simpson at the Rebel Games on Monday, March 6. Game time is slated for 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and will feature live stats.
