Softball ends season as runner-up at OAC Tournament

The Muskingum softball team fell in the Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournament championship game against Heidelberg on Saturday, 4-2. The Muskies advanced to the championship contest after eliminating Ohio Northern 1-0 in the opening game of the day. Muskingum ends its season with a 22-22 overall record.

Championship Game

  • Heidelberg took advantage of an early Muskingum error to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • The Student Princes added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on four hits to extend their lead to 3-0.
  • Muskingum got on the board in the fifth inning on senior Kelly Martin's RBI single that scored sophomore MacKenzie Martin from second.
  • Sophomore pinch hitter Haylea Debolt delivered a clutch RBI single in the sixth to score pinch runner Haley Dotson from second to trim the Muskie deficit to 3-2.
  • Heidelberg added a big insurance run in the top of the seventh on Randi Kelsey's solo home run to centerfield. The long ball was the first of the season for Kelsey.
  • The Muskies' quest for a championship ended after going in order in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Freshman Rachel Eberling (8-9) started the game and went 3.1 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits. Senior Kristin Gill tossed the final 3.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits.
  • Kelly Martin and senior Fallon Gawry led the Muskies with a pair of hits each.
  • Erin Chapman (13-5) registered the win after firing 4.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits.
  • Mikaela Mitsch led the Student Princes going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Marissa Smego and Taylor Hicks each had an RBI.
  • The contest marked the final game for Muskingum seniors Sarah Browning, Amber Bova, Kelly Martiny_fallon_7d6s">Fallon Gawry, Kristin Gill, Kelly Martin and Laina Walker.
  • Following the championship game, Browning, Bova and junior Jessica Matthews were named to the all-tournament team.

Game 3

  • Senior Sarah Browning dominated in the center of the diamond. She fired a complete game three-hit shutout, with seven strikeouts to improve to 9-5.
  • Sophomore Kelly Martinartinlark provided the Muskies with the lone RBI of the game with a groundout in the first inning to score Kelly Martin from third.
  • Bova, Clark and Kelly Martin all had a hit for the Muskies.
  • Ohio Northern's Kirsten Lightel suffered the loss after allowing one run on three hit in six innings of work.
