Softball wins share of OAC title

The Muskingum softball team won a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season title following its doubleheader split at Baldwin Wallace on Saturday. The Muskies won the opener 3-1 and fell in the nightcap, 9-4.

The OAC title is the first for the Muskies since 2008. Muskingum will enter the OAC Tournament, which is reserved for the top four teams in the league, as the two-seed and play three-seed Marietta on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at host Ohio Northern. Top-seed Ohio Northern will play four-seed John Carroll at 12:00 p.m. The tournament is slated for May 2-4.

In the opener, Muskingum (23-15, 12-6) used the long ball to power past Baldwin Wallace.

In the fifth inning, junior Kayley Bevard hit her first career home run to put the Muskies up 2-0. The two-run shot also scored junior Hannah Reese who singled earlier in the inning.

Muskingum made it 3-0 when sophomore Laina Walker hit her first career home run in the sixth inning.

Baldwin Wallace's lone unearned run came in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Ashley Gilbert fired a complete game two-hitter with three strikeouts to improve to 10-5 of the year.

Tabitha Murray took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits.

In the nightcap, Baldwin Wallace (18-19, 10-8) touched up the Muskie pitching staff for nine runs on 12 hits. The Yellow Jackets used a five-run third to take control of the outing. The big inning extended Baldwin Wallace's lead to 7-1 after three innings.

Muskingum was led by junior Jaclynn Hess who belted two home runs. Hess hit a solo shot in the second and a solo shot in the fourth.

Bevard also added a 3-for-4 game with a double and run scored.

Sophomore Kristin Gill started the game and didn't record an out before senior Rachel Bannister entered in relief. Bannister allowed three runs on three hits in two innings to take the loss. Gilbert tossed the final four innings and allowed five runs on eight hits.

Erica Morgan grabbed the win after going 6.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Morgan also aided her cause going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two home runs.

Muskingum next hosts Washington & Jefferson for Senior Day on Tuesday, April 29. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
