Softball uses power surge to take game two

The Muskingum softball team belted three home runs en route to beating Ohio Northern in game two in six innings, 10-2. The Polar Bears took the opener in five innings, 10-1.

The Muskie offensive surge was highlighted by freshman Morgan Craig's three-run home run, senior Jessie Little's two-run home run and senior Courtney Allen's solo home run. Craig's blast was the first of her career.

Muskingum scored 10 runs on 14 hits and used a four-run first to take the early momentum. The Muskies added a run in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Sophomore Kristin Gill tossed five innings of four-hit ball with two runs (one earned) with four stikeouts to move to 3-1 on the season.

Kirsten Burden took the loss after going 2.2 innings and allowing eight runs on 10 hits.

Tessa Topp led the Polar Bears with an RBI single.

In the opener, Ohio Northern (14-15, 7-5) erupted for 10 runs on nine hits and used the long ball to seal the win. Kelly Sheridan hit a two-run home run, Amanda Lahti hit a two-run home run and Colleen Baliga hit a solo home run.

Paige Ordean got the win after throwing five innings and allowing one run on eight hits.

Junior Ashley Gilbert was tagged with the loss after lasting 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits.

Little had an RBI single to pace the Muskie bats.

Muskingum (15-11, 8-4) hits the field next on Sunday, April 13 at Bethany. Game one of the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m.
