Men's soccer pushes nationally-ranked foe

The Muskingum men's soccer team battled for 90 minutes against 12th-ranked Denison on Wednesday afternoon. The spirited contest ended with the Big Red escaping New Concord with a 2-1 win.

The Basics

How It Happened

  • Muskingum held an 8-6 advantage in shots at the end of the first half.
  • Both teams attempted three corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Denison scored both of its goals on set pieces. Karch Majtenyi headed in a corner kick and Jordan Williams headed in a free kick.
  • Muskie senior Brett Hanna bodied in a free kick from junior Zach Schmauch in the 80th minute to trim the Muskie gap to 2-1. It marked Hanna's first strike of the season.
  • Junior William Debolt, junior Kyle Baker and freshman Alex Furst all logged two shots each for the Muskies.
  • The Muskies ended the contest with 12 shots and four corner kicks. Denison had 20 shots and eight corner kicks.
  • Muskingum pressured the Big Red defense throughout the contest and had one header hit the post and two other shots skim by the frame.

Between The Pipes

  • Muskie freshman Daniel Jennings made his first career start and recorded three saves and allowed two goals. 
  • Jack Thomas played all 90 minutes in frame for the Big Red and made three saves and allowed one goal.
