Second-half surge propels men's basketball past Otterbein

The Muskingum men's basketball team used a 20-7 second-half run to fuel a key OAC victory at Otterbein on Saturday night, 78-67.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (3-5, 3-5), Otterbein (1-3, 1-3)
  • Location: Rike Center – Westerville, Ohio 

Inside The Numbers

  • Senior Alex Masinelli and sophomore Tanner Gensler led the Muskie offense with 16 points apiece. Masinelli also added a team-high five assists, and Gensler registered eight rebounds.
  • Freshman Evan Boatwright and junior Trey Singleton added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
  • Freshman Bradley Russell had eight rebounds.
  • As a team, Muskingum shot 29-of-62 (.468) from the field and 5-of-17 (.294) from deep.
  • The win propelled the Muskies to split the season series against the Cardinals.
  • Leading the Cardinals was Dallas Patrick with 16 points and six rebounds.
  • Brennan Rains also chipped in 15 points for the Cardinals.
  • As a team, the Cardinals went 25-of-66 (.379) from the field and 12-of-34 (.353) from the three-point line.

The Difference

  • The first half saw multiple lead changes as both teams looked to take control early.
  • After a back-and-forth first half, it was Otterbein who took a 33-31 lead into halftime.
  • Muskingum came alive in the second half, going on a 20-7 run that stretched over seven minutes.
  • The Muskies led by as many as 19 late in the second half before Otterbein was able to cut it to an 11-point final margin.
  • Muskingum outrebounded Otterbein on the night 45-38.
  • The Muskies also finished with 36 bench points compared to Otterbein's 20.
  • Muskingum dominated the points in the paint, finishing with a 42-26 advantage.
