Dempsey sets all-time scoring record against Capital

Junior Marcus Dempsey scored a game-high 31 points against Capital on Wednesday night en route to becoming Muskingum's all-time leading scorer with 1,898 points. Dempsey passed Andy Moore (1988-92), who held the top spot with 1,871 points.

Historic Moment 

  • Dempsey entered the contest just five points shy of the Muskingum scoring record. After draining a three-pointer at the 15:06 point, Dempsey inched closer to the historical moment. Dempsey became Muskingum's all-time leading scorer on a fade-away jumper at the 10:11 mark of the first half. Following the historic shot, Dempsey was recognized for his milestone achievement and received a standing ovation from the packed Steele Center crowd. Dempsey went on to score a game-high 31 points. 
  • Dempsey needed 455 points from the start of the season to move into first place all-time.
  • Dempsey is currently the second-leading scorer in NCAA Division III men's basketball this season, averaging 30.2 points per game.

Inside The Numbers

  • Dempsey led the Muskies with 31 points off the bench and led the team in rebounds with six. He finished shooting 11-of-21 (.523) from the floor and went 7-of-7 (100.0) from the free-throw line.
  • Freshman Noah Begue added nine points in his first start of the season going 3-of-6 (.500) from the field.
  • Junior Alex Masinelli chipped in eight points in his first start on the year.
  • Leading the Crusaders was Reed Bradfield, who scored 20 points shooting 8-of-15 (.533) from the floor and went 4-of-5 (.800) from the charity stripe.
  • Muskingum finished the night going 23-of-58 (.397) from the field.
  • Capital ended the game shooting 31-of-68 (.456) from the floor.
  • The Crusaders finished out-rebounding the Muskies, 44-31.

Game Highlights

Both teams traded baskets within the first seven minutes of the game until the Crusaders went on a 15-4 run to take a 25-13 lead with 10:28 remaining in the first half. At the 10:11 mark, the moment came when Dempsey scored his fifth point on a fade-away jumper to pass Andy Moore (1988-92) and become Muskingum's all-time leading scorer. The Muskies were able to get within three points at 27-24 with 6:40 left in the first half, but the Crusaders held on to their tight lead for the rest of the frame and entered the break with a 39-32 edge.

In the second half, Capital used a 22-14 spurt through the opening nine minutes to push its lead to 61-46 with 11:30 on the clock. The Crusaders withstood several Muskingum charges throughout the remainder of the game to secure the road win.
