Football travels to Heidelberg for OAC matchup

The Muskingum football team will travel to take on Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Heidelberg on Saturday, October 1. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. from Hoernemann Stadium in Tiffin, Ohio.

The Series

  • Saturday's contest will mark the 99th meeting between Muskingum and Heidelberg, with the first game being played in 1914. The Muskies lead the all-time series, 57-35-6.
  • Muskingum recorded its 400th program win against Heidelberg on November 9, 1985. The Muskies beat the Student Princes, 38-31.

The Matchup

Muskingum enters the contest 2-1 after falling to third-ranked Mount Union last Saturday. This season, the Muskies are averaging 298 yards of total offense per game and 22.7 points per contest. On the other side of the ball, Muskingum's defense gives up an average of 347 yards per game and 23 points per contest.

The Muskies are led by senior quarterback Jordan Garrett with 520 passing yards and five touchdowns. Garrett has completed 47-of-76 (61.8%) passing attempts this year, averaging 173.3 passing yards per game.

Garrett's top receiving target this season has been fellow senior Zuri Edmondson, who has 17 receptions for 194 yards and one touchdown. Junior wideout Travis Roberson has 11 receptions on the year to go along with his 130 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Senior receiver Ja'Lin Goodman has six receptions for 77 yards, and junior receiver Travanti Keitt has added six catches for 57 yards and one touchdown.

On the ground, the Muskies are led by freshman Noah Wellmeier with 151 yards on 39 rushes. In two games this season, Wellmeier averages 3.9 yards per carry, and he's also logged one touchdown. Senior Donny Wilkinson has 95 yards on the ground off 34 attempts, and he leads Muskingum with two rushing touchdowns.

Defensively, the Muskies are led by sophomore linebacker Austin Willforth with 26 tackles. Willforth averages 8.7 tackles per game and has three tackles for a loss. Senior linebacker Tristan Howell has 17 tackles this season, while freshman defensive back Antwan Murphy has logged 16 stops. Junior defensive back Devin Roebuck and sophomore defensive back Cole Burch both have one interception on the year, while freshman defensive back Nick Thomas has a fumble recovery.

On special teams, the Muskies are led by junior kicker Hunter Albers. freshman kicker Aaron Meyers, and junior kicker Collin Scozzafava. Albers is 1-for-1 on field goals this season, with his make coming from 20 yards out. Albers is also 8-for-9 on extra points. Meyers is 1-for-2 on field goals this year, with his make coming on a 36-yard attempt. Scozzafava is averaging 39.6 yards per punt with a long of 60 and has placed one inside the 20. 

Heidelberg enters Saturday's contest sitting at 3-1, most recently falling to John Carroll 24-7 last Saturday. The Student Princes average 288.3 yards of total offense and 27.25 points per game, while their opponents average 269 yards of offense and 8.5 points per outing.

The Heidelberg offense is led by junior quarterback Drew Sims who is 53-of-87 (60.92%) on passes this season for 725 yards. Sims has tossed seven touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Student Princes' receiving corps is led by graduate senior wide receiver Brandon Reed with 12 receptions for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Graduate senior wideout Dimitri Penick has 17 receptions for 209 yards and two touchdowns this year, while senior receiver Devon Conyer has seven receptions for 101 yards and one touchdown.

Heidelberg's rushing attack is led by senior running back Montavious Yearby, with 406 yards on 86 rushes. Yearby has four touchdowns on the ground as well.

Defensively, Heidelberg is led by senior defensive back Griffin Pendry with 27 total tackles and one tackle for a loss.
