Football suffers fourth-quarter heartbreak at Capital

The Muskingum football team saw a fourth-quarter lead dissipate en route to suffering a heartbreaking 34-31 loss at Capital on Saturday night.  

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (0-3 overall, 0-2 OAC), Capital (2-1 overall, 2-0 OAC)
  • Location: Columbus, Ohio - Bernlohr Stadium 
  • Notes: The contest marked the first-ever home night football game at Bernlohr Stadium. 

How It Happened

  • The Muskies took a 24-20 lead into the fourth quarter. The Crusaders outscored the Muskies 14-7 in the final stanza to secure the win.
  • Muskingum generated 414 yards of offense, which included 242 yards rushing. Junior Melvin Smith led the Muskies with 92 yards on the ground on 13 carries with three scores.
  • Capital ended the game with 441 yards of offense, which included 414 yards rushing. Brent Walton led the ground game with 207 yards rushing on 28 totes with three touchdowns.
  • Muskingum senior quarterback Cody Williams completed 9-of-16 for 160 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also added 67 yards on the ground.
  • Freshman wide receiver Darius Hayes-Carruth led the Muskies with two grabs for 77 yards and a touchdown. The 20-yard score marked his first collegiate touchdown.
  • Sophomore Damon Jones also added one grab for 42 yards.
  • Junior linebacker Chaney Fulton led the Muskies with a game-high 16 tackles.
  • Senior linebacker Zach Barry and sophomore defensive back Hayden Fulton each had 11 stops.
  • Tim Seifert led the Capital defense with 11 hits.
  • The game was tied at 14-14 at the half.
  • Muskingum took it's first lead (17-14) of the night on junior kicker Cody Dent's 35-yard field goal to cap off an 11-play, 41-yard drive. 
  • Smith's two-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the third quarter gave the Muskies a 24-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The plunge ended a six-play, 82-yard drive.
  • The Muskies were 5-of-6 in the red zone and 6-of-10 on third-down conversions.
