Esports set to kick off inaugural season

The Muskingum esports program is set to kick off their inaugural season on Saturday, September 21.

The new esports era is led by the programs first-ever head coach Quinn O'Bryan, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the esports gaming world. O'Bryan has played in countless ESEA league tournaments in Counter-Strike Global Offensive on a semi-professional team and reached the highest rank possible in Counter-Strike Global Offensive that less than one percent of players achieve. O'Bryan is also active in numerous leagues for Counter-Strike, Overwatch, and League of Legends. The esports team will compete in multiplayer games such as Rocket League, Counter-Strike, Overwatch, League of Legends, and Fortnite.

O'Bryan has assembled an impressive roster of student-athletes from the Great Lakes region and internationally. Each student-athlete has different skill sets that enhance the esports team.

The Muskies are members of the newly created Great Lakes Esports Conference that consist of nine teams across the Ohio and Indiana landscape. The teams competing in the conference are Muskingum, Defiance College, Lourdes University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Ohio Northern University, Tiffin University, and Trine University. The league will play a nine-week fall schedule on Saturdays from September 21 through November 16, with one bye week for each team. The same schedule will also be followed for a spring season.

The Muskies start their inaugural season on Saturday, September 21, against Defiance College in Rocket League at 9:00 a.m. The next match is at 11:00 a.m. with the Overwatch squad taking on Mount Vernon. The final competition of the day will be at 12:00 p.m. when the League of Legends squad takes on Ohio Northern.

On Sunday, September 22, the Counter-Strike squad will get their season underway against Trine at 4:00 p.m.

You can watch all the events live at twitch.tv/fightingmuskies for all the action. The esports team will also be having viewing parties in the Boyd Science Center in Room 343, where you can watch the live stream.
