Baseball drops series against Ohio Northern

The Muskingum baseball team dropped a pair of games on Friday against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. The Muskies slipped in game one by a score of 16-3 before bouncing back in game two where they battled the Polar Bears for 10 innings before falling 7-5.

  • Records: Muskingum (18-6 overall, 4-4 OAC), Ohio Northern (18-6 overall, 6-0 OAC)

Inside The Numbers 

Game 1 

How It Happened In Game Two

  • The Muskies took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a single by junior Sam Palmieri that scored Mellerson from third.
  • Ohio Northern responded with a homer in the top of the fourth that brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Polar Bears.
  • The Muskies would then tie things up in the bottom of the sixth as Melick laid a bunt down to bring in Teke.
  • After a pair of scoreless innings the Polar Bears would tack on three runs in the top of the ninth, bringing the score to 5-2 in favor of Ohio Northern.
  • Sophomore Conner Thamann would help the Muskies rally with a triple to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning.
  • Mellerson would hit a chopper in the infield that would bring Thamann home and set himself at first base to continue the rally.
  • After a few batters, Palmieri would double down the left field line to bring home two more Muskies and tie the contest up.
  • The Muskies would then record two outs in the top of the tenth before the Polar Bears would hit a slow roller that helped score a run to take the lead.
  • After tacking on another run the Polar Bears would hold off the Muskies on their final three outs.

Game 2

  • The Muskies finished with five runs, 12 hits, five walks, and five RBI's. 
  • Teke and Palmieri each tallied two hits to lead the Muskies. Palmieri added three RBI's and Teke added two runs scored.
  • Mellerson added one hit, one RBI, and one run scored.
  • Melick recorded one hit and one RBI.
  • Thamann had one hit and one run scored. Thamann launched a triple in the ninth inning to start the Muskies rally.
  • Sophomore Aiden Reis, sophomore Benny Hess, Barnette, Owens, and Castaneda each finished with one hit.
  • Sophomore Gavin Schultz earned the start in game two. Schultz went for five innings and recorded nine strikeouts.
  • Junior Max Vosters, senior Nathan Johnson, and graduate student Erik Cover came in for relief in the contest.

Up Next   

  • The Muskies will be back in action on Wednesday, April 9, when they travel to Capital for an OAC doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Huntington Park in Columbus.
