
The Muskingum baseball team received 48 total votes in the first in-season NCAA Division III Baseball Coaches Poll of 2025.
The Muskies are off to a historic pace to start the early part of the season. Through 14 games the Muskies have tied the best start to a season with a 13-1 record. The Muskies have dominated from the beginning of the season where they bested Ohio Christian in a three-game series at a neutral site contest in Gastonia, North Carolina. Muskingum followed that up with an intense win against Westminster that was decided in 11 innings of action. They carried that energy into a three-game series against William Peace in Raleigh, North Carolina where the Muskies once again dominated by sweeping the Pacers.
The Muskies added a 3-0 record at the North Central College Tournament that was hosted at Marietta College. Muskingum bested North Central, Ohio Wesleyan, and Hanover in the tournament by a combined run differential of 41-20.
Most recently the Muskies have continued to dominate with a 16-8 home-opener win over Oberlin and a two-game series sweep of Waynesburg by scores of 13-1 and 10-3. The Muskies tallied a season-high for hits in a game with 22 in game one against Waynesburg.
At the plate, the Muskies have shown great poise with a .326 team batting average while averaging 10.6 runs per game. They have tallied 40 doubles, nine triples, and nine home runs.
Senior Weston Melick bats at an impressive .420 average to pace the Muskies. He is responsible for 21 hits, eight doubles, one triple, and two home runs. Melick has an on-base percentage of .532 and currently shows a slugging percentage of .740. He has also added a team-high 23 RBI's.
On the mound, the Muskies combined rotation has posted a 4.69 ERA while restricting opponents to a dismal .266 batting average.
The trio of graduate student Erik Cover, sophomore Gavin Schultz, and sophomore Shoei Yamashita have led the Muskie rotation on the mound. Each of them have recorded three wins on the season. Cover has tallied a team-high 26.1 innings of action while handling a 3.76 ERA. Yamashita has added 22 innings of action on the mound and sits at an impressive 0.41 ERA. Schultz has 15.2 innings on the mound and records 14.36 strikeouts per nine innings.
The Muskies will set their eyes to Bethany on Wednesday, March 19 at 4:00 p.m. for their next contest and will open Ohio Athletic Conference action on Saturday, March 22 at 1:00 p.m. against Wilmington.
