Baseball starts season strong with Valentine's Day wins over Ohio Christian

The Muskingum baseball team started the season strong with two wins over Ohio Christian on Valentine's Day. The Muskies dominated with a 11-3 win in game one and used their hot hitting to finish out a 5-2 win in game two.

  • This was the Muskingum baseball team's season opener.
  • This is the second straight season the Muskies have started 2-0.
  • Sophomore Benny Hess and freshman Jasper Owens both hit their first career home run as a Muskie in today's games.

Game 1

  • The Muskies scored 11 runs in seven innings of play.
  • Sophomore Grant Mellerson led the Muskies with a strong three hits. Mellerson recorded two RBI's, a run scored, and one walk.
  • Freshman Jasper Owens added two hits for the offense. Owens slammed a solo shot home run to highlight his day in the batters box.
  • Junior Sam Palmieri added a hit and two RBI's.
  • Sophomore Conner Thamann added a three RBI at bat as he fired off a triple.
  • Sophomore Benny Hess rounded out the Muskie bats with a solo shot home run.
  • Graduate Erik Cover tossed 4.2 innings where he struck out three batters. Cover allowed only two hits and one earned run in his first outing of the season.
  • Senior Nathan Johnson came in for relief and went 1.1 innings while striking out two batters. 
  • Sophomore Weston Hartman threw one inning, struck out one batter, while giving up no runs.

Game 2

  • Muskingum scored five runs in seven innings of play.
  • Senior Tobie Teke logged two hits for the Muskies. Teke also finished with two RBI's and a stolen base.
  • Palmieri logged one hit and an RBI.
  • Sophomore Aiden Reis had a hit and an RBI.
  • Sophomore Shoei Yamashita pitched three innings, struck out two, and only gave up one run in his time on the mound.
  • Sophomore Gavin Schultz logged four innings of work on the mound for the Muskies. Schultz tallied five strikeouts and didn't surrender any runs.

  • The Muskies will conclude the series against Ohio Christian tomorrow, Saturday, February 15 when they play at 2:00 p.m. The Muskies will look for the sweep in North Carolina at Sims Legion Stadium.
