Baseball sweeps Capital at Huntington Park

The Muskingum baseball team swept OAC-foe Capital at Huntington Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (14-9 Overall, 4-4 OAC), Capital (6-18 Overall, 0-8 OAC)
  • Location: Huntington Park – Columbus, Ohio

Notables

  • The contests were held at Huntington Park, home of the Cleveland Guardians AAA affiliate the Columbus Clippers.
  • With the sweep, Muskingum moves to 4-4 in the OAC on the season. That matches the programs total wins in conference from the 2022 campaign. 

Game One

The Difference

  • After falling behind 3-0 over the first five innings, Muskingum found the scoreboard in the sixth inning off an error by Capital. The Comets' error scored sophomore Tobie Teke.
  • Later in the inning sophomore Austin Lippolis tallied an RBI groundout to pull Muskingum within a run at 3-2.
  • In the seventh Muskingum took their first lead of the game with a two RBI single from sophomore Weston Melick. Melick's single scored senior Dominic Gorence and junior Wyatt Reeder.
  • Later in the inning Teke tallied an RBI single to score junior Gavin Hawk and add to the Muskingum lead.
  • Muskingum continued to pour it on in the eighth inning as Melick blasted a two-run homer and Muskingum tacked on another run via a throwing error by the Comets.
  • Capital would add another run in the ninth inning, but with was enough as Muskingum cruised to the 8-4 win.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by sophomore Weston Melick who finished 2-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Tobie Teke went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior Gavin Hawk also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Freshman Sam Palmieri notched a 2-for-5 line with a run scored, while junior Wyatt Reeder tallied a 1-for-3 line with a run scored.
  • Junior Travis Reynolds went 1-for-4 with a run scored, and junior Peyton Carr finished 1-for-5 with a run scored.
  • Capital was led by CJ Rockwell who tallied a 2-for-3 line with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Freshman Blake Jodrey got the start on the mound for Muskingum. Jodrey tossed six innings and struck out six batters to pick up his third win of the season.
  • Freshman Nathan Johnson tossed two innings in relief for the Muskies, while junior Liam Carey and sophomore Brock Pfister also made appearances out of Muskingum's bullpen.

 

Game Two

The Difference

  • Muskingum came out of the gates firing, tallying two runs in the first inning to open up an early lead. In the first, sophomore Tobie Teke tallied an RBI off a fielder's choice to score freshman Sam Palmieri.
  • Later in the inning sophomore Austin Lippolis tallied an RBI single to score senior Dominic Gorence.
  • In the third inning, Teke scored on a dropped fly from the defense, then later in the inning Palmieri ripped an RBI single up the middle to score sophomore Travis Reynolds and extend Muskingum's lead to 5-0.
  • After Capital scored seven runs over the fourth and fifth innings, Muskingum tallied another run in the sixth inning via an RBI single from junior Gavin Hawk.
  • Muskingum scored the game-tying run in the eighth inning off a clutch RBI single from Teke to center field. Teke's single scored sophomore Weston Melick.
  • In the 11th inning, Muskingum tallied the eventual game-winning run off an RBI single through the left side from Reynolds. Reynold's go-ahead single scored Teke on the play.

  • Freshman Sam Palmieri finished 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore Austin Lippolis went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Junior Wyatt Reeder notched a 2-for-5 line, while senior Dominic Gorence tallied one hit and two runs scored.
  • Junior Gavin Hawk also tallied one hit with an RBI, while junior Peyton Carr tallied a run scored.
  • Capital was led by CJ Rockwell who finished the game 2-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI.
  • Freshman Max Vosters started on the mound for the Muskies. Vosters tossed four and one-third innings and struck out six batters.
  • Senior Clark Jennings and freshman Jake Roshau made appearances in relief for the Muskies, while sophomore Austin Lippolis pitched two innings out of the bullpen and picked up his first win of the season on the mound.

  • Muskingum will be back in action on Saturday, April 15, when they travel to take on fourth-ranked Baldwin Wallace. Game one of the OAC doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Berea, Ohio.
