Baseball sweeps Wilmington to open OAC play

Behind dominant pitching, the Muskingum baseball team earned an OAC sweep over Wilmington on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (11-3 Overall, 2-0 OAC), Wilmington (8-10 Overall, 0-2 OAC)
  • Location: Mose Morehead Field – New Concord, Ohio
  • Attendance: 322

Notables

  • The doubleheader marked the first OAC contests for either team this season.
  • With the sweep Muskingum moves to 11-3 overall on the year.
  • Freshman Blake Jodrey pitched five shutout innings in relief in game one to earn the win.
  • Freshman Jason Murphy tossed a complete-game and only gave up two hits to earn the dominating victory in game two.
  • Sophomore Tobie Teke worked a walk-off basses loaded walk in the ninth inning of game one to deliver Muskingum the victory.

Game One

The Difference

  • Muskingum got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Weston Melick.
  • After Wilmington scored five runs across the next three innings, Muskingum answered back with a run off sophomore Tobie Teke's RBI ground out. The run cut Muskingum's deficit to 5-2.
  • The Muskies got on the board again in the seventh with an RBI double from senior Dominic Gorence.
  • In the eighth, freshman Jackson Duchesne scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-4 Wilmington.
  • Muskingum tied the game in the ninth off another RBI from Melick.
  • With the bases loaded and two outs, Teke stepped to the plate an worked a four-pitch-walk to push across the winning run for Muskingum. The walk-off win was Teke's second of the season.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by senior Dominic Gorence who finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, while sophomore Tobie Teke tallied a 1-for-3 line with two RBIs.
  • Sophomore Weston Melick notched two RBIs and a run scored, while freshman Sam Palmieri went 1-for-5 with a run scored.
  • Junior Ryan Schwartz, senior Jake Hymrod, freshman Jackson Duchesne, junior Peyton Carr, and sophomore Austin Lippolis all tallied one hit each for Muskingum as well.
  • Freshman Jake Roshau got the start on the mound for Muskingum. Roshau tossed four innings and gave up three runs with three strikeouts for the Muskies.
  • Freshman Blake Jodrey tossed five shutout innings in relief for Muskingum to earn his second win of the season. Jodrey only allowed one hit in his five innings of work.
  • Wilmington was led by Tyler Shaneyfelt who went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

 

Game Two

The Difference

  • Muskingum jumped on the scoreboard early, tallying two runs in the first inning. Muskingum first run came off an RBI single from sophomore Weston Melick, while the second was scored off an RBI ground out by junior Gavin Hawk.
  • After Wilmington scored one run in the third, the Muskies answered right back with a run of their own courtesy of Hawk who tallied a sac fly to center field which scored freshman Sam Palmieri.
  • Muskingum continued to pour it on, registering two runs on the sixth, four runs in the seventh, and two runs in the eighth to enforce the 10-run rule.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by sophomore Weston Melick who tallied a 4-for-5 line with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior Gavin Hawk went 2-for-3 from the plate two RBIs and three runs scored, while junior Ryan Schwartz finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
  • Freshman Sam Palmieri went 1-for-3 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot, while junior Nate Keiser also finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
  • Freshman Jason Murphy continued his stellar start to the season with a complete game effort. Murphy tossed eight innings and gave up just two hits to move to 2-0 on the year.
  • In game two, Wilmington was led by Evan Kelsey who finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Up Next

  • Muskingum will be back in action on Tuesday, March 28, when they host Oberlin. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. from Mose Morehead Field.
