Baseball earns win against Maritime (N.Y.)

The Muskingum baseball team earned a win to finish off Florida Coast Spring Training against Maritime (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon, 6-2.

Freshman Nick Salyer started on the mound for the Muskies and pitched the first seven innings. He allowed one run on four hits and notched six strikeouts during the game.

Muskingum started the scoring in the second inning off a sacrifice fly from freshman Giancarlo Chianta to make it 1-0, and then in the third inning freshman Devin Ryan hit a sacrifice fly to center field and make it 2-0. The Privateers earned their first run in the fourth inning off an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the sixth inning, Chianta notched another RBI hit, while freshman Dominic Gorence launched a deep shot to left field to bring in two runs and give him his first career homerun. Freshman Ethan Guilliams added another run in the seventh inning to the Muskies a 6-1 lead heading into the eighth. Muskingum held off the Privateer bats in the last two innings to earn the victory.

The Muskies next return home to New Concord to take on Denison on Wednesday, March 11. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Mose Morehead Field.

Baseball defeats Drew in close battle

Friday, March 6

The Muskingum baseball team defeated Drew in a hard fought battle on Friday afternoon, 5-3.

Senior Holden Martin started on the mound for the Muskies and pitched the first seven innings. Martin allowed two runs on five hits and struckout five batters on the day. 

The Muskies got on the scoreboard first in the first inning on a stolen base by freshman Devin Ryan to make it 1-0 early. Drew took the lead in the bottom of the first inning off RBI hits to make it 2-1. In the fourth inning, junior Matt Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game up at 2-2. In the all important ninth inning, Muskingum scored three runs off a Stewart RBI double and sacrifice hits from freshman Allex Santacroce and freshman Dominic Gorence to bring in Muskie runs and make it 5-2 in favor of the Muskies. Senior Josh Bigrigg stepped up to the mound and sealed the victory for the Muskies and earned his second win of the season.

The Muskies finish off the Florida trip when they take on Maritime (N.Y.) on Saturday, March 7. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m. in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Baseball drops doubleheader to Elizabethtown

Friday, March 6

The Muskingum baseball team dropped both games in doubleheader action to Elizabethtown on Thursday afternoon, 18-13 and 20-7.

In the first game, sophomore Jake Norris started on the mound for Muskingum and pitched the first three innings allowing four runs on five hits and earned two strikeouts. Elizabethtown got the scoring started in the first inning with an RBI single. Freshman Ethan Guilliams RBI doubled in the second inning and sophomore Chayce Lundell hit an RBI single in the third to give the Muskies a 2-1 lead. The Blue Jays then scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and the two runs in the fourth to retake the lead, 7-2. After Elizabethtown took a 13-3 lead after the six inning, the Muskies erupted for eight runs in the seventh to cut the deficit to two runs and only trail 13-11. The Blue Jays finished scoring four more runs in the last two innings to seal the victory.

For the second game, sophomore Craig Nixon got the start on the mound and pitched the first the three and one-third innings for the Muskies. Muskingum started the scoring off in Game 2 with a RBI single from freshman Devin Ryan in the first inning to give the Muskies an early 1-0 lead. Elizabethtown answered with six runs in the second inning to take the lead 6-1. Sophomore Brett Carson hit an RBI single in the second inning, while junior Matt Stewart scored on an error and freshman Dominic Gorence singled to right field to score a Muskie run cutting the deficit to 6-4. The Blue Jays tallied five runs in the fourth and fifth innings, while scoring five more runs in the ninth and fend off the Muskie offense.

The Muskies take on Drew on Friday, March 6. Game time is for 1:00 p.m. in Ft. Pierce, Fla. 

Baseball hits past Houghton

Wednesday, March 4

The Muskingum baseball team hit past Houghton to earn a big team win in Day 4 action on Tuesday afternoon, 14-2.

Freshman Brayden Bush started on the mound for the Muskies and pitched the first seven innings. Bush only allowed two runs on six hits and struck out nine batters during the game to earn his first career win.

Both teams were scoreless in the first three innings until Houghton struck first in the fourth inning on an RBI single to make the score, 1-0. In the fifth inning, the Muskies erupted for eight runs to take an 8-1 lead. Freshman Devin Ryan got the scoring started with an RBI triple that scored freshman Giancarlo Chianta and then sophomore Chayce Lundell singled to left field to score Ryan. Sophmore Trey Yoder hit an RBI single to left field that scored Lundell and the following at bat freshman Andrew Wargo hit into a fielders choice that scored junior Matt Stewart. Freshman Dominic Gorence hit a sacrifice fly to score another Muskie run, while the next at bat sophomore Brett Carson hit a two-RBI triple and Chianta finished the scoring attack with an RBI double.

The Highlanders earned their second run of the game in the seventh inning, but Muskingum stepped up in the ninth inning scoring six more runs to the seal the big win in Florida, 14-2.

The Muskies take on Elizabethtown in doubleheader action on Thursday, March 5. Game 1 is at 11:00 a.m. and Game 2 is at 2:00 p.m. in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Baseball falls to Lebanon Valley

Tueday, March 3

The Muskingum baseball team fell to Lebanon Valley in Day 3 action on Tuesday afternoon, 21-9.

Freshman Nick Salyer made his pitching debut and pitched the first two innings allowing seven hits. The Muskies scored the first run of the game off an RBI triple from sophomore Brett Carson that scored sophomore Sam Pinckert. Lebanon Valley scored six runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead and then would tally nine more runs in the third inning to take a 15-1.

The Muskies would not go away easily as they scored six unanswered runs to make the score 15-8 in the fifth inning. Muskingum saw RBI hits from Carson, freshman Garrett Hardy, and freshman Andrew Wargo. The freshman duo each earned their first college hits and RBIs. The Dutchman later scored four more runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory on warm and sunny Tuesday afternoon.

The Muskies next take on Houghton on Wednesday, March 3. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Baseball dominates the Colonels

Monday, March 2

The Muskingum baseball team earned a dominating victory against Wilkes on Monday afternoon, 8-3.

Senior Holden Martin pitched the first six innings for Muskingum. Martin only allowed one run on six hits and notched five strikeouts en route to his first win of the season.

The Muskies got off to a quick start in the first inning with sophomore Brett Carson starting off with a leadoff triple and sophomore Sam Pinckert hitting a double right to score Carter. Freshman Devin Ryan hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, in the next at-bat to give the Muskies an early 3-0 lead. Wilkes got on the board in the second inning with an RBI double to make the score, 3-1. In the fourth inning, junior Matt Stewart hit a solo shot to make the score 4-1 and give him his first home run of the year. The Colonels managed to get within one run in the seventh inning off a two-RBI single to cut the lead, 4-3. 

Muskingum came up big in the eighth inning scoring four runs to make the score 8-3. Ryan tripled into left field to score Pinckert and give him his third RBI of the game, sophomore Chayce Lundell blooped a hit over the shortstop to score Ryan from third, and freshman Drew Dittoe hit a two-RBI double into left field to score two more runs to seal the win.

The Muskies next take on Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, March 3. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Baseball goes 1-1 against Massachusetts Maritime on Opening Day

Sunday, March 1

 The Muskingum baseball team earned a thrilling 5-4 Game 1 victory while falling narrowly in Game 2 to Massachusetts Maritime, 5-3.

In Game 1, sophomore Jake Norris started on the mound for the Muskies and threw six innings, striking out three batters while allowing seven hits and three runs. The Muskies got on the board first in the third inning off an RBI single from sophomore Chayce Lundell and the give the team a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the Bucs tied up the score 1-1 off a sacrifice fly. Junior Matt Stewart gave the Muskies the lead in the fifth after hitting a two-RBI double and give Muskingum a 3-1 edge. The Bucs ended up taking the lead in the seventh inning, 4-3, after getting two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. In the seventh, sophomore Sam Pinckert scored the tying run off an RBI double from freshman Devin Ryan. While at third base, Ryan ended the game off a stolen base into home plate to seal the win for the Muskies, 5-4.

Junior Josh Bigrigg replaced Norris in the sixth inning and pitched one inning earning a strikeout while allowing one run and earn the win on the mound for Muskingum.

In the second game, sophomore Craig Nixon was the starting pitcher and pitched two innings earning one strikeout and allowed three runs. The Bucs jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, giving them the early advantage. The Muskies got two runs on the board in the third inning off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Sam Pinckert and an RBI double from freshman Devin Ryan making the score, 3-2. The Bucs gained another run in the third, making it a 2-4 advantage. Muskingum got within one score in the sixth inning off an error from the Bucs scoring Pinckert to make the score, 4-3. Massachusetts Maritime gained their final run of the game off a passed ball and sealed the win, 5-3.

The Muskies next take on Wilkes at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2.
