Baseball stumbles against Washington & Jefferson

The Muskingum baseball team stumbled against Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday evening, 15-5.

  • Records: Muskingum (4-10 overall), Washington & Jefferson (5-7 overall)

  • Muskingum scored five runs on five hits 
  • Senior Ben Van Wey led the squad by going 1-for-2 at the plate with a double.
  • Freshman Chayce Lundell registered two RBIs.
  • Sophomore Zach Ullom went 1-for-1 at the dish with one RBI.
  • Senior pitcher Kyle Gannon took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits. Gannon tallied one strikeout in the game.
  • Michael Zito guided the Presidents at the plate by going 2-for-2 with four RBIs.
  • Tanner Gaerke secured the win on the mound for Washington & Jefferson. Gaerke allowed one run on three hits and notched three strikeouts.

  • Washington & Jefferson took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits.
  • In their next at-bat, the Presidents tallied eight runs on five hits to gain a commanding 10-0 advantage.
  • In the top of the fourth, Lundell put Muskingum on board with a fielder's choice RBI.
  • Over the next four innings, Washington & Jefferson increased its lead to 15-1.
  • In the top of the eighth, sophomore Nick Bilyeu advanced home on a wild pitch.
  • The Muskies rallied in the top of the ninth inning. Junior Ashton Budzinski ignited the scoring when he crossed the plate after sophomore Cole Rostash was hit by a pitch.
  • Then, Ullom smashed an RBI-single to left field to make it 15-4.
  • Bileyu slid into home when Lundell reached first base on a fielder's choice.
  • Despite the Muskies' momentum, Washington & Jefferson was able to escape the inning, allowing three runs on two hits with two runners left on base.

  • The Muskies next open OAC play with a doubleheader at Wilmington on Saturday, March 23. Game times are slated for 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
