Baseball sweeps Wilmington

The Muskingum baseball team grabbed an Ohio Athletic Conference sweep against Wilmington on Wednesday. The Muskies took the opener 9-8 in 11 innings and won the nightcap, 4-2.

In the opener, senior Matt Connor delivered the game-winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th to score sophomore Brett Robberts from third to lift the Muskies to the thrilling 9-8 win against the Quakers.

The Muskies jumped out to an 8-2 lead after four innings before Wilmington scored six unanswered runs that were highlighted by a three-run home run by Russ Neeley in the top of the ninth to tie the game and set the stage for the extra-inning affair.

Freshman Logan Roberts led the squad going 3-for-6 with three RBIs, one run and run double. The performance at the plate extended Roberts' hitting streak to 14 games.

Connor had two RBIs and senior Will Simpson, senior Michael Lynn and Robberts all had two hits.

Senior Alex VanDine notched his third win after firing 2.2 innings of two-hit relief. Freshman Bryce Curry started the game and went five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Sophomore Austin Miller gave up four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Billy Foster took the loss after allowing one run on three hits in 3.2 innings of relief. Brandon Arehart started the game and was chased in the first inning with one out after allowing three runs on one hit with three walks.

Neeley led the Quakers at the plate going 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

In game two, Muskingum used a four-run second inning to take the early momentum en route to the win.

Connor notched a sacrifice bunt for an RBI, freshman Brandon Marczika had an RBI double, Michael Lynn had an RBI single and Simpson laced an RBI double to highlight the Muskie second-inning scoring outburst.

Freshman Dillon McDermott tossed a complete game nine-inning gem to notch his first career win. He limited the Quakers to two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Tyler Schrock took the loss after going 2.2 innings and allowing four runs on five hits.

Ryan Henning led Wilmington at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored and Arehart added an RBI.

Muskingum (9-12, 4-4) hits the field next when it hosts OAC foe Ohio Northern on Saturday, April 12. First pitch of the scheduled twinbill is slated for 1:00 p.m.
