Strong pitching propels Muskies to DH sweep

The Muskingum baseball team rode a pair of strong pitching performances from senior Alex VanDine and freshman Derrick Barker en route to a home-opening sweep against Ohio Christian on Thursday. The Muskies took the opener 4-0 and game two, 5-1.

In game one, VanDine fired a complete game one-hitter with six strikeouts to notch the shutout and improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Muskies scored four runs on two hits in the second inning. Freshman Logan Roberts delivered a two-run single and freshman Dallas Allen worked an RBI bases loaded walk.

Richie French was tagged with loss after going six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. Trevor Whitesed had the lone hit for Ohio Christian with a double in the fifth inning.

Muskingum ended the game with four runs on seven hits.

In the nightcap, Barker limited the Trailblazers to one run on four hits with five strikeouts to notch the complete game win. The victory was the first of Barker's career.

The Muskies scored five runs on seven hits. Muskingum plated a run in the first, two in the third and one each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Sophomore Brett Robberts went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and senior Michael Lynn added a pair of runs and one RBI. Roberts also added an RBI.

Zach Williams suffered the setback after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings of work. Caleb Penny logged the Trailblazer RBI and Whitesed registered two hits.

Muskingum (5-6) next hosts Ohio Athletic Conference foe Capital on Saturday, March 22 at Mose Morehead Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. The contest will mark the league opener for both teams.
