Student-Athlete Insurance Information

Sports-related injuries can occur while participating in athletics at Muskingum University.  As an NCAA institution, Muskingum provides insurance coverage for student-athletes during their participation in regular and non-traditional athletic seasons.  As the result of an injury, student-athletes may receive medical care on-campus from the Athletic Training staff or off-campus from other medical providers.

Off-campus medical care

Muskingum’s Athletic Training professionals carefully evaluate whether an injury requires medical care off-campus, including, but not limited to, emergency transport, emergency room visits, and visits to a specialist.  When off-campus medical care is provided, insurance is processed in one of the following two ways:

  1. If the athlete or the athlete’s parent(s) have medical insurance, all medical bills will be sent to that insurer first.  This is known as “primary coverage.” The University’s policy, known as “secondary coverage,” may apply to some or all of any remaining balance.
  2. If the athlete or athlete’s parent(s) are on Medicaid, the University’s policy will be the primary coverage.

To submit a claim, the athlete must contact the Head Athletic Trainer who will provide a letter explaining the claims process and an insurance card that must be presented to any provider(s) the athlete sees for their injury.  If the athlete does not contact the Head Athletic Trainer before receiving medical care, the student-athlete and/or parent(s) are responsible for responding to any requests for billing information.

On-campus medical care

Muskingum has partnered with Vivature to bill primary insurance carriers for physician-prescribed services rendered in the training room.

  • As in any other health care setting, there will be a charge for office visits with the training room.  Muskingum accepts all health insurance plans and will bill the primary health insurance provider directly.  Muskingum will not bill the student-athlete for these services.
  • Parents may receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) either by mail or electronically – this is not a bill.  Please send any EOBs to MUAT_EOB@muskingum.edu.
  • Any member responsibility shown on an EOB will be submitted through Muskingum’s secondary athletic insurance carrier for review and payment.
  • Parents who receive a check from an insurance company must forward the payment to the University, as some carriers issue payment to policyholders instead of the providers.  It is important that you forward the payment to Muskingum.

Muskingum University has a minimal role in the insurance billing process.  Please be sure to read and understand the following:

  • Muskingum University does not determine which claims are covered; the insurers make all coverage determinations.
  • If an injury was not related to direct participation in sanctioned practice or events, the parent(s) will be responsible for any balance due.
  • Some medical providers/facilities charge more than what is “usual and customary.”  The University’s insurance policy does not pay charges that exceed what is “usual and customary,” so the athlete or parent(s) may still receive a bill for the athlete’s medical treatment.
  • Insurance is time sensitive.  Please respond to all requests for information in a timely manner.
