Muskies win OT thriller

Muskingum senior Moriah Mathies scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime  to propel the Muskies to a thrilling 2-1 win at Defiance on Sunday.

With the win, the Muskies secured their best non-conference record in school history at 7-1-1.

Mathies ended the game after stripping the ball from a defender to create a 1v1 to goal. The strike was Mathies' ninth goal of the season and third game-winning tally.

Muskingum's first goal to tie the game came from junior Hailey Dickey in the 52nd minute. Dickey hit a shot to the back post off an assist from Mathies. The goal was Dickey's first of the season and the assist was Mathies' seventh.

Taylor Lantz scored Defiance's goal in the 41st minute off an assist from Kassie Memmer.

The Muskies ended the game with a 21-10 advantage in shots and 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Mathies led the team with six shots, while the sophomore tandem of Stephanie Price and Morgan Price each had four.

Sophomore Liz Mitchell started the game between the pipes and made two saves and allowed one goal. Senior Melissa Emmerich played the final 48 minutes and made three saves to garner the win.

Lantz led the Yellow Jackets with three shots and Chelsie Moyer had two.

June Delgreco played the entire game in goal and made eight saves and allowed two goal.

Last year, Muskingum beat Defiance in overtime at the 93:09 mark. This year, the Muskies ended the game at the 93:08 mark.

Muskingum next hosts Baldwin Wallace on Saturday, October 4 in McConagha Stadium at 3:30 p.m. The game will mark the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
