Phenomenal comeback

The Muskingum women's soccer team scored three goals in the final eight minutes of the game to stun Franciscan on Tuesday night in frenzy-filled McConagha Stadium, 4-2.

The flurry of Muskie goals started in the 82nd minute. Senior captain Moriah Mathies used a double assist from freshman Miranda Bishop and sophomore Morgan Price to tie the contest at 2-2.

Sophomore Samantha Harbert gave Muskingum a 3-2 lead in the 83rd minute on a full volley from the top of the box. Harbert's first tally of the season, which happened 50 seconds after Mathies' goal, was assisted by Morgan Price.

The scoring surge was capped off in the 90th minute when senior captain Carissa Myler headed in a corner kick from Mathies. The strike was the first of the year for Myler.

Muskingum grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a breakaway goal by Mathies that was set up by Morgan Price and junior Hailey Dickey. Morgan Price ended the contest with a career-best three assists. Mathies two-goal and one-assist performance elevated her to fifth all-time in career points with 39.

Muskingum ended the game with a 20-12 advantage in shots and 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Junior Summer Setliff led the squad with five shots, while Mathies and Morgan Price each added four.

Sophomore Liz Mitchell played all 90 minutes in frame and made five saves and allowed two goals.

Franciscan tied the game at 1-1 in the 69th minute on a breakaway goal by Julia Cocozza. The score was assisted by Megan Lusio.

Cocozza added her second tally of the night in the 82nd minute to give Franciscan a 2-1 lead on Muskingm which set the stage for the phenomenal Muskie comeback.

Mallory Garthwaite made seven saves for the Barons (2-2) in frame and allowed four goals.

With the thrilling win, Muskingum moves to 4-0-1 on the season. Muskingum next hosts Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m. in McConagha Stadium.
