Muskingum shuts out Franciscan

The Muskingum University women's soccer team shutout Franciscan University on Thursday night in McConagha Stadium, 3-0.

With the win, Muskingum moves to 4-1-1 overall. The Muskies next host Defiance College for its annual Parents' Day game on Sunday, September 15. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m. in McConagha Stadium and will be broadcast live on WMCO 90.7 FM and simulcast on the Muskie Sports Network.

Muskingum grabbed the early lead in the 21st minute when freshman Stephanie Price headed in sophomore Hailey Dickey's corner kick. The goal was the second of the season for Price, while the assist was Dickey's second of the year.

Muskingum then used a two-goal barrage over a two-minute span to expand its lead to 3-0.

Junior Moriah Mathies scored her third goal of the season off a double assist from senior Raven Francis and sophomore Summer Setliff in the 31st minute.

Freshman Morgan Price notched her second goal of the season in the 32nd minute to complete the scoring. Morgan Price ended the game with a team-high three strikes.

Muskingum and Franciscan ended the game with 11 shots each, while the Muskies held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Melissa Emmerich started between the pipes for the Muskies and recorded one save in 63 minutes of work. Freshman Liz Mitchell played the final 27 minutes in goal and made two saves.

The shutout, which is the second of the season for Muskingum, was aided by a strong defensive presence from sophomore Becca Angert, senior Kaitlyn Matz, freshman Sarah Landuyt, freshman Samantha Harbert and Stephanie Price.

Mallory Garthwaite played all 90 minutes in goal for the Barons (3-2) and allowed three goals and recorded three saves. Hannah Cooke led the squad with four shots.
