Muskies shutout Oberlin to improve to 2-0 on the year

The Muskingum University women's soccer team notched the first win of the 2013-14 year for Muskingum athletics on Friday with a 3-2 win at Bethany College and kept the momentum rolling on Saturday with a 2-0 win against Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon at the Bethany Tournament.

Against Bethany, Muskingum was led by junior captain Moriah Mathies and senior captain Raven Francis.

Mathies gave the Muskies an early 1-0 lead when she found the back of the net in the second minute of play. She ended the game with four shots.

Bethany answered with a pair of strikes in the 15th and 29th minutes of play to give the Bison a 2-1 edge at the half.

Muskingum tied the outing in 57th minute when Francis scored off of a keeper deflection from her first shot. Francis logged a game-high seven shots, including six on frame.

Mathies netted her second goal and game-winning strike in the 78th minute.

Muskingum ended the outing with a 24-10 advantage in shots and 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Melissa Emmerich started between the pipes for the Muskies and allowed two goals. Sophomore Elise Zimmerman played the final 45 scoreless minutes in goal.

On Saturday, freshman Morgan Price scored her first career goal on a header off of a cross from sophomore Hailey Dickey. The strike put the Muskies up 1-0 in the 20th minute. Price ended the outing with a pair of shots on frame.

Francis added the Muskies' second tally and her second goal of the season with a blast into the upper 90 in the 87th minute of play off an assist from Mathies. Francis ended with three shots, including two on frame.

Muskingum ended the game with 10-8 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Zimmerman played all 90 minutes between the pipes and recorded five saves en route to registering her first career shutout win.

The Muskie backline led by freshman Samantha Harbert, freshman Stephanie Price, sophomore Becca Angert, senior Kaitlyn Matz and junior Carissa Myler helped the Muskies notch their first shutout of the young season.

Muskingum hits the pitch next when it hosts Point Park University for its home opener on Tuesday, September 3. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in McConagha Stadium and will be broadcast live on 90.7 FM and simulcast with live stats on the Muskie Sports Network.
