Women's Basketball clinches OAC victory in OT

Junior Hallie Stocker posted a career-high 15 points to lead the Muskies past Capital 68-66 in an Ohio Athletic Conference overtime thriller at the Anne C. Steele Center.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (3-2 overall, 2-0 OAC), Capital (3-3 overall, 0-2 OAC)
  • Location: New Concord, Ohio - Anne C. Steele Center

Pregame

  • Muskingum held a moment of silence in remembrance of John Glenn, Jr.

First Period

  • Capital opened the contest with a 7-0 run before Senior Mallory Taylor connected from downtown with 7:01 to play.
  • Trailing late in the first quarter, the Muskies used a pair of three-pointers by junior Hallie Stocker and Taylor to pull within 16-8.
  • The Crusaders outscored Muskingum 22-18 in the first period.

Second Period

  • In the second period, Taylor sparked an 8-0 run to give the Muskies their first lead of the contest 26-24 with 7:43 remaining.
  • Seconds later the Crusaders regained the lead, 27-26 as Rachel Horn connected for three.
  • The two teams were held scoreless for almost four and a half minutes before junior Caitlyn Smith completed the steal and score.
  • Junior Olivia Besancon closed out the half for the Muskies as she connected from three-point land to give Muskingum the 33-29 advantage.
  • Taylor led the Muskies in the first half with 11 points, while Smith chipped in nine points.
  • Muskingum shot 6-for-14 (.429) from three and 13-for-34 (.382) from the field.
  • Capital was led by Colleen Fondessy and Meredith Ovies with eight points each.
  • The Crusaders shot 11-for-26 (.423) from the field and 4-for-4 (1.00) from the free throw line.

Third Period

  • The Crusaders came storming back in the third quarter as they rattled off five straight points to take the 34-33 lead with 8:38 to play.
  • Muskingum regained the 44-42 advantage after Smith hit a running three as time expired. 

Fourth Period

  • The Muskies played from behind most of the fourth quarter.
  • Trailing 59-55 in the fourth period, junior Alexandra Carson connected from behind the arc with :16 seconds remaining to pull Muskingum within one.
  • Muskingum was forced to foul sending Annie Wachtman to the free throw line. Wachtman missed the first and connected on the second putting Capital on top 60-58. 
  • With time winding down, Besancon beat her defender to finish a runner in the lane and force overtime.

Overtime

  • A Stocker three-pointer with 3:59 to play gave Muskingum its first OT lead, 63-61.
  • Capital responded with a three of its own to take the 64-63 advantage.
  • Taylor tied the score 66-66 after knocking down a pair of clutch free throws for the Muskies.
  • With :07 seconds remaining, Stocker delivered what was the game-winning jumper.

Post Game

  • Stocker led the way for the Muskies as she recorded a career-high 15 points and pulled down four rebounds.
  • Taylor finished with 13 points, while Smith added 12 points.
  • The Muskies finished the contest 11-for-32 (.344) from three-pointer and 25-for-70 (.357) from the field.
  • Capital was led by Fondessy with a game-high 23 points.
  • Erin Risner recorded a double-double for the Crusaders netting 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
  • Capital shot 27-for-63 (.429) from the field and 6-for-8 (.750) from behind the arc.
