Women's basketball drops key OAC game

The Muskingum women's basketball team dropped a key Ohio Athletic Conference game at Wilmington on Wednesday evening, 63-56.

With the loss, Muskingum (6-18, 4-13) is now in ninth place in the OAC and trail rival Marietta by one game. The top eight teams at the end of the OAC regular season advance to the OAC Tournament. The Muskies next play at John Carroll on Saturday, February 21. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.

Senior Taylor Maurer led the team with 15 points on five three-point shots. Sophomore Jasmine Goings added 10 points.

Sophomore Mallory Taylor recorded nine points and six rebounds.

Muskingum shot .345 (20-of-58) from the floor but was only 5-of-27 (.185) from behind the arc.

Wilmington (14-10, 9-8) was led by Courtney Tucker who had 14 points, four assists and four steals. Spencer Robles added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Quakers connected on 15-of-43 (.349) from the field, which included hitting nine three pointers. Wilmington ended the outing with a 30-10 edge in bench points.

The Muskies led the majority of the opening half and took its largest lead at 27-15 with 6:55 on the clock following a Goings' free throw. Muskingum led 31-24 at the break.

In the second half, a three-point shot by Maurer stretched the Muskie lead to 46-36 at the 11:34 mark. The Muskies maintained their edge and led 54-48 with 6:02 to play. However, the last minutes of the contest belonged to the Quakers as they ended the outing on a 15-2 surge to turn back the Muskie challenge.
