Muskies celebrate Senior Day against ONU

The Muskingum women's basketball fell in its Senior Day game against Ohio Northern on Saturday, 60-50. 

Prior to the contest, Muskingum recognized seniors Taylor Maurer and Hannah Mountjoy. Taylor is a health and fitness major from Minerva and is the daughter of Mark and Jan Maurer. Mountjoy is a criminal justice major from Danville, Kentucky and is the daughter of Shawn and Lenica Mountjoy.

With the loss, Muskingum (6-17, 4-12) is now tied for eighth in the Ohio Athletic Conference with rival Marietta. The top eight teams at the end of the OAC regular season advance to the OAC Tournament. The Muskies next play at Wilmington on Wednesday, February 18. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Sophomore Jasmine Goings led the team with 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Olivia Besancon added 13 points and four boards.

The Muskies ended the game shooting .283 (15-of-53) from the floor.

Ohio Northern (18-5, 14-2) was paced by Jordan Kimes, who logged a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Carly Thomas also added 10 points and four assists.

The Polar Bears shot .393 (22-of-56) from the field and held a 49-27 advantage in rebounds and a 32-16 edge in points in the paint.

Muskingum jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the opening three minutes of play. The surge was highlighted by three-point shots by Besancon and junior Angela Darnley. The Muskies maintained their lead the entire half and took a 27-22 lead into the break.

In the second half, Ohio Northern took its first lead (32-31) on a basket by Thomas with 15:31 on the clock. The Polar Bears stretched their margin to 46-36 with 7:25 to play and led by as many as 13 in the final minutes of the outing.
