John Carroll fends off Muskies' upset bid

The Muskingum women's basketball team's upset bid against 22nd-ranked John Carroll fell short on Saturday in an 86-79 loss in the Recreation Center.

The Muskie rally started with 5:07 to play and the Blue Streaks holding a 76-60 lead. Muskingum used a 17-4 run over the next four-plus minutes to energize the crowd and to cut its gap to 80-77 with 56 seconds to play. However, John Carroll was clutch at the free throw line in the final minute going 6-of-6 to seal the win and turn back the Muskie late charge.

Muskingum (3-10, 1-5) was led by junior Angela Darnley, who scored 15 points, with five steals and three assists.

Senior Taylor Maurer added 14 points with four assists and sophomore Jasmine Going had 12 points and five rebounds.

Freshman Olivia Besancon had 11 points.

The Muskies ended the game shooting .446 (25-of-56).

John Carroll (12-1, 5-1) was led by Katlyn Spahar who scored a game-high 26 points. Beth Switzler had 24 points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Streaks shot .429 (27-of-63) from the floor.

Muskingum next plays at Mount Union on Wednesday, January 14. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
