Three-point barrage propels Muskies past Heidelberg

The Muskingum women's basketball team hit 14 three-point shots and registered 24 assists en route to beating Heidelberg on Saturday afternoon in the Recreation Center, 82-78.

Senior Taylor Maurer led the three-point attack with four, while freshmen Alexandra Carson and Olivia Besancon each made three and sophomore Mallory Taylor and freshman Schyler Fennimore each hit two. The Muskies finished the outing connecting on 14-of-27 (.519) from behind the arc.

Maurer also had a team-best eight assists, while Besancon had five. Muskingum recorded assists on 24 of its 26 baskets.

Taylor led the team with 18 points and sophomore Jasmine Goings had 14 points. Besancon and Maurer each added 12 points.

Muskingum (3-4, 1-1) ended the game shooting .406 (26-of-64) from the floor and .842 (16-of-19) from the free throw line.

Heidelberg (1-4, 0-2) was led by Carli Patrick who logged a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Allie Hawkins also added 14 points and Theresa Jackson chipped in 13.

The Student Princes shot .429 (24-of-56) from the field.

The Muskies overcame a slow start that had Heidelberg up 15-4 after the opening seven minutes to rally back and tie the game at 37-37 at the half on Besancon's three-pointer in the waning seconds of the frame.

The second half featured several momentum changes with the Muskies capturing the last one. Muskingum used a 16-4 surge over the final 4:18 to overcome an eight-point deficit to secure the 82-78 victory.

Muskingum next travels to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday, December 13. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
