Softball uses dominant performances to sweep John Carroll

The Muskingum softball team swept John Carroll following dominant performances from seniors Kalie Eshelman and Madelyn Thomas. The Muskies won game one 1-0 and followed that up with a 5-1 win in game two.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (24-8 overall, 11-3 OAC), John Carroll (3-24 overall, 2-12 OAC)
  • Location: Bracken Field - University Hts., Ohio

Inside the Numbers

Game one

  • The Muskies scored one run on five hits with one error in the contest.
  • Senior Madelyn Thomas dominated in the circle for the Muskies. Thomas put together an impressive complete game that featured 10 strikeouts without giving up a run.
  • Sophomore Cara Taylor led the Muskies offensively with one hit and one run scored. Taylor crossed home plate in the first inning on a first and third situation that saw the Blue Streaks throw down to second to get their first out of the inning while surrendering the lead.
  • Senior Kalie Eshelman and senior Rosie Hayes both added a hit to fuel the Muskies.
  • Freshman Natalie Smith and freshman Taryn Mickley each recorded a hit. 
  • Taylor added a stolen base to the mix.
  • John Carroll was led by Kaylyn Odelli who recorded three hits.

Game Two

  • Muskingum scored five runs on 10 hits without committing an error. 
  • Eshelman led the way for the Muskies with three hits, two RBI's, and scoring three runs. Eshelman fired off a double and a home run to command the Muskie bats.
  • Sophomore Sadie Smith added two hits, one RBI, and scored one run. 
  • Freshman Elizabeth Wauford finished with two hits and one RBI.
  • Taylor, sophomore Eliana Shaheen, and freshman Tareyn Born rounded out the offense with one hit each.
  • S. Smith and Wauford each had a double in the contest.
  • Taylor, Hayes, Eshelman, and Smith all had a stolen base.
  • Born got the start in the circle and went four innings while only allowing one run. Born earned the win for the Muskies.
  • Freshman Bethany Rodman came in for relief and went three innings while striking out four batters. 
  • Melissa Smith led the Blue Streaks with one hit and one RBI.

Up Next

  • The Muskies will be back in action on Saturday, April 27, when they host the Otterbein Cardinals for their senior day game. The doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
