Softball shutouts Marietta to stay alive in OAC Tournament

The Muskingum softball team shutout OAC-rival Marietta after five innings, in game four of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday evening, 8-0.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (27-13), Marietta (24-15)

How it Happened

  • A two-run RBI single up the middle from Haley Hawk saw the Muskies take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Muskingum plated three runs on four hits in the second to extend its lead. A leadoff solo home run from Carlee Lamacz and a two-out, two-run, RBI triple from Cara Taylor made it, 5-0 Muskies.
  • Muskingum piled on three more runs in the third to continue its offensive surge. RBI singles from Carlee Lamacz and Kalie Eshelman saw the Muskies add its sixth and seventh run of the contest. The eighth and final run of the game came off a sacrifice fly from Claire Guilliams as Muskingum secured the 8-0 victory. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum plated eight runs off nine hits.
  • Senior Hannah Smith earned the win in the circle for the Muskies after throwing five shutout innings, only allowing two hits. Smith also tallied four strikeouts en route to earning her 16th win of the season. 
  • Muskingum was led by senior Carlee Lamacz who finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. 
  • Freshman Kaitlyn Bibb added two hits and two runs scored, while junior Kalie Eshelman also tallied two hits and a run scored.
  • Freshman Cara Taylor notched one hit, a run scored and two RBIs, while senior Haley Hawk also added a hit and two RBIs. 
  • Senior Sarah Piteo finished the contest with a hit and run scored to pace the Muskingum scoring effort.

  • The Muskies return to action on Friday, May 12, when they take on Mount Union in an elimination game at 11 a.m. The winner will advance to the OAC Championship game and take on Baldwin Wallace.
