Softball sweeps at Capital to earn 20th win of the season

The Muskingum softball team swept Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Capital on the road to earn its 20th win of the season by the final scores of 4-2 and 9-2 on Wednesday evening.

The Basics 

  • Records: Muskingum (20-6 overall, 6-4 OAC), Capital (6-22 overall, 2-8 OAC)
  • Location: Columbus, Ohio – Clawson Field  

Inside the Numbers- Game One:

  • Muskingum scored four runs on 11 hits.
  • Junior Krissy Hughes paced the Muskies offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate, which included a home run, a team-high two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Freshman Jaelyn Meade went 2-for-4 at the dish, which included a double, and a run scored.
  • Senior Haylea Debolt went 2-for-4 at the plate, which included a double, and an RBI.
  • Senior Rachel Eberling, freshman Alexia Dowdle, freshman Riley Powers, and senior Abigail Orr each tallied a hit, with Eberling adding an RBI.
  • Eberling earned her eighth win in the circle, pitching a complete game allowing two runs on four hits, one walk, and registered two strikeouts.

Inside the Numbers- Game Two:

  • Muskingum scored nine runs on 13 hits.
  • Sophomore Jolyn Shunk went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
  • Freshman Karsyn Shaffer went 2-for-4 at the plate, which included a double, and one run scored.
  • Meade also went 2-for-4 at the plate, which included a double, run scored, and an RBI.
  • Eberling also went 2-for-4 at the plate, which included a double, and two runs scored.
  • Senior Melissa Maiorano finished with a team-high four RBIs.
  • Debolt accrued two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Hughes, Meade, and Powers each produced an RBI.
  • In the circle, freshman pitcher Hannah Duff obtained her 10th win allowing two runs on seven hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.

Game Highlights

In game one, Muskingum jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning as Debolt singled to center field, allowing Hughes to score the run, while a sacrifice fly by Eberling brought in Meade across the plate to make it 2-0. Capital responded right back as they scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. The Crusaders scored in the bottom of the fifth off another sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. The final scoring of the game came from Hughes who pounded a two-run bomb to right field to lift Muskingum over Capital to win game one.

The Muskies got off to a quick start in game two as they plated three runs in the top of the first inning to capture the early 3-0 lead. The Crusaders answered right back as they blasted a two-run dinger in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2. An RBI single by Powers and Hughes in the top of the third pushed the Muskies lead to 5-2. Muskingum scored four more runs in the top of the fourth from an RBI single by Debolt and a three-run single by Maiorano to secure the victory in game two.
