Maiorano grand slam leads softball in sweep of Denison

Junior Melissa Maiorano hit a grand slam to lead Muskingum softball as they swept Dension on Tuesday at the DU softball Field. The Muskies won game one 14-5 and claimed game two, 7-3.

Game One

  • In the top of the second, with the bases loaded, Maiorano capped off a seven-run inning as she recorded her first career grand slam scoring sophomore Krissy Hughes, sophomore Cassie Thomas and junior Abigail Orr
  • Denison scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning before a RBI double by senior Jessica Matthews in the fourth extended the Muskingum lead. 
  • Muskingum tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth and four in the seventh inning.
  • Maiorano led the Muskies at the dish going 2-for-4 with a game-high six RBI's.
  • Matthews finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's. 
  • Muskingum scored 14 runs on 12 hits.
  • Junior Haylea Debolt recorded the win for the Muskies pitching 5 innings surrendering one run on seven hits. 
  • Dension was led at the plate by Ricki Asher going 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
  • Sarah Herold dealt the loss for Denison going 1.2 innings allowing seven runs on three hits.

Game Two

  • Orr led the Muskies in game two going 2-for-4 with three RBI's. 
  • Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fifth, Muskingum capitalized on a Dension miscue that scored two runs. Freshman Jennifer Schrader plated the final run of the inning giving the Muskies the lead for good, 3-2.
  • Muskingum tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning as Matthews homered to left field, her first of the season. 
  • As a team, Muskingum scored seven runs on 15 hits. 
  • Sophomore Rachel Eberling tallied her first win of the season as she pitched a complete game surrendering three runs on five hits.
  • Denison was led by Lauren Secaras going 1-for-3 with two RBI's.
  • Taryn Welch recorded the loss for Dension pitching 4.1 innings allowing four runs on nine hits.

  • Muskingum returns to action Saturday, March 25 as they open Ohio Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Otterbein. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
