Softball splits DH at Washington & Jefferson

The Muskingum softball team split a non-league doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday. W&J won the opener 5-4 and the Muskies took game two, 10-7.

  • Muskingum concludes its regular season at Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin Wallace on Saturday, April 30. The twinbill is slated for 1:00 p.m. Muskingum will enter play tied for fourth in the OAC with Heidelberg. The top four teams at the end of the regular season advance to the OAC Tournament, which will be held at Otterbein May 6-8.

Game 1

  • Washington & Jefferson scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error by Muskingum. The tally gave the Presidents the eventual 5-4 win.
  • Melissa Maiorano led the Muskies with a solo home and two RBIs in the game.
  • Sophomore MacKenzie Martin added an RBI double.
  • Sophomore Amy Clark recorded an RBI on a groundout.
  • Muskingum scored four runs on 10 hits.
  • Senior Sarah Browning started the game and lasted 1.2 innings and allowed four runs on four hits.
  • Senior Kristin Gill took the loss after tossing 4.1 innings of relief ball and allowing one unearned run on six hits.
  • Rachel Marx led W&J with a three-run double.
  • Danielle Kochka went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Game 2

  • Muskingum scored 10 runs on 14 hits.
  • Senior Kelly Martin narrowly missed hitting for the cycle. Martin went 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and double. She ended the contest with four RBIs.
  • Senior Fallon Gawry went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run.
  • Maiorano also added two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • The Muskies secured the win with a four-run seventh to take a 10-6 lead. Muskingum scored four runs on three hits and took advantage of two W&J errors in the frame.
  • Junior Haley Dotson made her first appearance of the season in the center of the diamond and registered the win in relief. Dotson fired 3.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits.
  • Abby  Cunningham and Meghan Staab led Washington & Jefferson at the plate by each belting a home run.
