Softball rolls past Washington & Jefferson

The Muskingum softball team notched a doubleheader sweep of Washington & Jefferson on Thursday afternoon at Donna J. Newberry Field. The Muskies won the opener 7-3 and took game two in six innings, 9-1.

Following the sweep, Muskingum (22-16) now turns it attention to the final day of the regular season in the Ohio Athletic Conference slated for Saturday, April 25. Muskingum will enter play tied for fourth place in the OAC with Otterbein and John Carroll with a 9-7 conference record.  The Muskies will host Baldwin Wallace for Senior Day at 1:00 p.m., while Otterbein plays at Heidelberg and John Carroll plays at Marietta. The top four teams at the end of the regular season advance to the OAC Tournament scheduled for May 1-3.

In the opener, junior Sarah Browning fired a complete game and scattered seven hits with three unearned runs and six strikeouts to grab the win. She also added an RBI single and scored one run.

Sophomore Alyxis Moore and senior Jaclynn Hess each had two RBIs and senior Hannah Reese and junior Kelly Martin had two runs scored.

Washington & Jefferson (18-12) lead briefly 3-0 after the top of the first before the Muskies tied the game in the bottom of the first with three runs on three hits.

Muskingum took the lead with two runs in the second and completed the scoring with two runs in the fourth on a Hess double and sophomore Jessica Matthews' sacrifice fly.

Krista McCarthy took the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.

Ally Doty led the Presidents with two RBIs and Morgan Figura added one.

In the nightcap, Muskingum scored nine runs on 12 hits and junior Kristin Gill tossed a complete game eight-hitter with four strikeouts to propel the Muskies to the win.

Freshman Amy Clark and junior Laina Walker led the team with three RBIs each. Clark ended the outing going 3-for-3.

Junior Fallon Gawry, Moore and Martin all had an RBI. Martin and freshman Melissa Maiorano each belted a triple.

Bethany Shepard was handed the setback after going 5.2 innings and allowing nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits.

Figura led W&J going 3-for-3 with and RBI.
