Softball stretches win streak to nine

The Muskingum softball team swept Bethany on Wednesday afternoon at Donna J. Newberry Field. The Muskies won the opener 7-0 and took the nightcap in eight innings, 6-5.

With the sweep, Muskingum stretched its season-best winning streak to nine games. 

In the opener, junior Sarah Browning and freshman Haylea Debolt combined to fire a three-hitter to hold the Bison at bay. Browning went four innings and allowed one hit to earn her sixth win and Debolt pitched the final three innings and allowed two hits to notch the save.

Junior Kelly Martin and senior Jaclynn Hess each had two RBIs and senior Hannah Reese scored three runs to help lead the Muskie effort.

Also adding pop to the lineup were sophomore Morgan Craig, sophomore Jessica Matthews, Martin and Reese who all had two hits, while Hess was a perfect 3-for-3.

Muskingum ended the game with seven runs on 12 hits.

In the nightcap, Muskigum forced the extra inning with a run in the bottom of the seventh, after Bethany scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. The Muskies won the game in the bottom of the eighth on Martin's sacrifice fly that scored Craig who reached by an error to open the home inning.

Freshman Amy Clark help lead the Muskie offensive surge going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBIs. Martin had two hits and one RBI, while Browning also added an RBI. 

Browning got the win in relief after tossing five innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits.

Muskingum (19-15, 8-6) next plays at rival Otterbein in a key Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 18. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. The Muskies and Otterbein are tied with John Carroll for fourth place in the OAC.
